Take Her Look [For Less]

At the Hulu premiere of Difficult People on July 30, Amy Poehler wowed in an outfit that was far from difficult. In fact, Poehler graced the red carpet at New York’s School of Visual Arts Theater in an easy black culotte-style jumpsuit, which she punched up with not one, but two fierce animal prints — a subtle zebra print sandal and a leopard print clutch.

According to InStylePoehler’s effortless black jumpsuit is by Shoshanna and retails for $340 (if you love her jumpsuit, you can purchase the exact piece on sale for $170 here). If you love this clean, minimalist look, we’ve found all the right pieces to take her entire look for less — that is, less than the $170 sale price of her Shoshanna jumpsuit. Read on for the results!

Since jumpsuits are all the rage these days, finding a chic black midi jumpsuit to rival Poehler’s look was a fairly simple task. The Strapless Wide-Leg Jumpsuit from Forever 21 not only has a straight neckline reminiscent of the Shoshanna jumpsuit, it also has a very similar defined waist from which the wide, pleated pant legs fall. Adding to the charm of this jumpsuit are two slanted side pockets that fall naturally within its box pleats. For only $27.90, this jumpsuit is an easily accessible way to recreate Poehler’s look .

Poehler’s zebra print sandals kept in line with the title of the new Hulu series, proving to be a ‘difficult’ find. However, we finally landed on another black and white animal print sandal to incorporate into our look for less — the Berkeley Sandal in snakeskin by DV by Dolce Vita mimics the black and white of the zebra stripe while also maintaining the simple two-strap construction of Poehler’s sandals. Available on Amazon.com for only $29.35, these sandals will not only add some personality to this look, it will definitely become your wardrobe’s new utility heel.

Our look for less wouldn’t be complete without a killer leopard print clutch, and Call It Spring has just the right clutch to polish off the look. The Teora clutch offers a true leopard print in a sleek silhouette, and the best part — it’s on sale for only $15 on CallItSpring.com.

Amy Poehler’s $340 minimal-chic jumpsuit look wowed us with its hidden complexity in mixing two different animal prints. But what is quite possibly more stunning is that we were able to recreate this look for only $72.25 — that’s $97.75 under the sale price of her Shoshanna jumpsuit! Now you can take all that extra money you saved and go shopping for another amazing outfit!

Style 101: Cigarette Pants

If you’ve ever wondered what the heck cigarette pants are, wonder no more.

Cigarette pants are a slim-cut trouser or pant. These pants come in a range of materials and prints, ranging from styles done in twill and denim to others done in solids and florals.

cigarette pants def

Although cigarette pants are related to skinny pants or skinny jeans, there is a very subtle difference between the two cuts. Cigarette pants have a very slim, but straight cut throughout the leg of the pant, while skinny pants or skinny jeans narrow as they reach the ankle. Adding this bit of width at the ankle can actually be quite beneficial, as it can help to balance out a wider hip while creating a long, lean legline.

If cigarette pants sound like something you need to add to your wardrobe, there are several great styles of the chic pants that will instantaneously punch up your personal style.

Every girl needs a pair of simple black pants in their wardrobe, and the Lysse Twill Cigarette Pants from Zappos is just the pair you’ve been needing. These pants are done in a comfortable, stretchy twill that will hold its shape while flattering your curves. You’ll get a lot of wear out of this wardrobe must-have, so their $98 price tag is money well spent.

If you’re looking for a dressier trouser style, try the Sammie Pleated Waist Cigarette Pants in nude from Missguided. Done in a nude stretch crepe material, these pants make a great alternative to the basic work trouser. For only $40, these pants are a great way to test out the cigarette pant style without investing too much money into the look.

You’ll want to trade in your skinny jeans when you see this cigarette style by AG jeans. The AG Stilt Cigarette Leg Jeans in the Free wash offer a slim cut on the leg without narrowing at the ankle like your skinny jeans. These jeans come in a fairly uniform wash with a slight gradient on the hips and thighs, allowing for these jeans to be dressed up for a night out or dressed down for running errands on Sunday morning. The AG cigarette style jeans are available at Nordstrom.com for $164.

Now that you know all about cigarette pants and how they differ from skinny jeans, you have no excuse not to add at least one pair of these chic pants to your wardrobe.

She Leads, You Follow: ‘The Prophet’ Screening Edition

The Bing Theatre at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art played host to a screening of GKIDS’ Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet on Wednesday, July 29, and the event drew a crowd of high-profile, well-dressed celebrity guests.

Salma Hayek, who not only produced the film but starred in it as Kamila, graced the red carpet in what People reports was a black tuxedo-inspired Balenciaga dress which she paired with black Gucci heels. She completed her look with a silver clutch, a silver broach, and silver earrings, while keeping her hair simple in a sleek half-updo.

Following Hayek on the red carpet was Eva Longoria, who stunned in a cobalt blue bodycon dress that featured a sheer mesh panel flanked by white stripes at the waist, which she paired with a black clutch and black pumps. Longoria topped off her look with a chic top knot and dramatic eye makeup.

Although Hayek and Longoria are decked out for a red carpet event, there are still some things we can take away from their red carpet looks and apply in our everyday lives.

  1. Menswear can be feminine – Salma Hayek’s tuxedo-inspired dress shows us just how versatile menswear can be. This dress has satin lapels just like a men’s tuxedo jacket, but it is transformed into a feminine piece not only because it is a dress, but also because of the shape of the dress. Shape is created in this dress by a thick half-belt that closes the blazer-like construction of the dress and defines her waist; this also creates a quasi-slit in the front, adding a little bit of sexiness to frock. To incorporate menswear into your style, try a blazer to start; look for blazers that feel a little more masculine, meaning they have a stronger shoulder, a thicker lapel or a boyfriend cut throughout the body of the jacket. Then, to inject some femininity into the look, pair the blazer with a girly floral or a dainty lace top.
  2. Mesh makes shape – Eva Longoria’s dress shows us that mesh is not only good way to share a peek of skin in an outfit, but it is also a great way to create shape — that is, if it is strategically placed. The mesh on Longoria’s cobalt frock is placed in a demi-chevron pattern that falls right at her natural waistline, thus accentuating her waist and creating shape in a dress that otherwise lacks shape-creating seams. Having the mesh outlined in white panels further emphasizes her waist. When shopping for mesh-embellished pieces, make sure that the mesh does double duty, meaning that the mesh is placed in such a way that it will create shape while also showing some skin. The easiest way to ensure that your mesh embellishments work with your body is by taking Longoria’s lead and wearing the mesh as a waist-defining structure on the garment. Shape can also be created via mesh panels at the shoulders to give the illusion of broader shoulders or panels at the hips to create curves on your bottom half.

Take Her Look [For Less]

If you’ve ever wondered what someone could possibly wear to a Mr. Clean event, Ashley Greene showed us the perfect outfit for such a thing. According to The Daily Mail, the actress attended the July 28 #15MinReno Ideas with Mr. Clean event, which was held at the 24th Street Loft in New York City, invoking the clean theme in a white L’Agence dress which she paired with a pair of fuchsia Paul Andrew pumps,.

Greene’s white L’Agence Alexandra sleeveless ponte mini dress, while adorable with its clean aesthetic and chic pockets, doesn’t come with such an adorable price tag — that’s a $420 price tag, to be exact. Couple that with her gorgeous fuchsia Paul Andrew Zenadia pumps that retail for around $675, and her simple chic outfit comes in just under $2,000 at $1,095. But if this outfit is exactly what your wardrobe has been missing, we have two great dresses and one eye-popping pair of pumps to recreate Greene’s look for less. Read on to see our reimagined looks!

The main focal point of Greene’s L’Agence dress is its seaming and pleating details around the waist, and the Eliza J Pleat Detail Sleeveless Crepe A-Line Dress from Nordstrom mimics these details almost exactly. The seaming on this dress starts at the bust and curves inward toward the waist, while the pleat down the center imitates the pleating at the waist of Greene’s dress. Done in a flattering A-line silhouette, this dress is sure to become your go-to white dress. And for only $91.90, it’s a well-made, yet much more cost-effective version of Greene’s L’Agence frock.

The Christin Michaels Sleeveless Sheath Crew Dress from 6pm is another great way to play off of the seaming details of Greene’s dress for a fraction of the cost. Done in a soft off-white, this dress has lace-embellished seaming to highlight its sewn-in shape while also adding subtle visual interest. The lace even extends onto the back of the dress at the waist, ensuring that your waist is defined coming and going. For only $40.99, your purse and your wardrobe will thank you for purchasing this fashionable frock.

To polish off your copy-cat look, you’ll need a pop of color at your feet, and there is no better shoe for the job than the BCBG Paris Jaze Suede Pump from DSW. This pump is cut in a d’orsay style, exposing the instep of your foot, while the bright fuchsia of the suede is reminiscent of Greene’s Paul Andrew pumps. These pumps will complete your look for less for only $59.95.

While Ashley Greene’s clean white look for the #15MinReno Ideas with Mr. Clean event totaled almost $2,000, our look for less — that is, two dresses and one pair of pumps — will only set you back $192.84. So this basically means that you should buy both dresses to go with the pumps because you’ll be able to take Greene’s look in two different, yet equally stylish and affordable ways.

Tackling the NFL

Another national sports league is opening its doors to women, and this time its the NFL.

According to GlamourJen Welter has been named the NFL’s first female assistant coaching intern, working on the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff once training begins on August 1.

Although this is a first for the league, it is not Welter’s first time involved with professional level football. Glamour says that Welter “spent 14 years playing professional football as a part of the Women’s Football Alliance,” at the position of linebacker. In 2014, she became the first female non-kicking player to join an Indoor Football League team.

After playing for the indoor league team, the Texas Revolution, Glamour reports that the team hired her in February 2015 to coach linebackers and special teams. And the rest, as they say, is history.

When asked if he thought a female could ever coach in the NFL, Bruce Arians, head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, told reporters earlier this year, “‘I wanted to open that door. Coaching is nothing more than teaching.'” Arians also said that players are only concerned with coaches’ abilities to transform them into better players, saying “‘[they] don’t [care] if you’re the Green Hornet. [They’ll] listen.'”

And what an example of hard work and determination she will be to her players. Congratulations to you, Jen Welter! And bravo, Arizona Cardinals!

We all know that Olivia Palermo is fashion goddess among us, but she continues to prove just how stylish she is with each outfit she steps out in. This time, she wowed us with only one piece: a chic white jumpsuit.

The Daily Mail reports that the socialite was boarding a private helicopter in New York City when she was spotted looking effortlessly cool in a Lovers + Friends halter jumpsuit with side cutouts, which she paired with teal sunglasses and leopard print Francesco Russo sandals.

If you love Palermo’s easy-chic jumpsuit, you’ll love that it’s available at Revolve for $189. But, if you’d rather have her stunning Francesco Russo Leopard Print Calf-Hair Sandal, you may have to take out a small loan to afford them since they’re priced at $1,195 at Neiman Marcus! All hope is not lost, however, if you want to take this look for yourself — we found all the pieces necessary to recreate this look for less than $200. Read on to see the results!

Finding a white jumpsuit to rival Palermo’s Lovers + Friends style was quite the task, but we ended up finding two jumpsuits that rise to the occasion. The first jumpsuit to catch our eye was the Kitty Corner Jumpsuit from Tobi. With a similar waistline and wide-leg silhouette, this jumpsuit is a great alternative to Palermo’s $189 look. It also features a deeper v-neckline, as well as an open x-back, which adds a little bit of life to the crisp look. Available for $68, this jumpsuit is the perfect canvas from which to recreate Palermo’s look.

If you’d rather have a jumpsuit with cutouts at the front like Palermo’s look, try the Taylor Cutout Jumpsuit from MakeMeChic.com. The cutouts at the waist extend onto the back, allowing for an almost crop top-like look from the back. This jumpsuit also has a wide-leg silhouette reminiscent of Palermo’s Lovers + Friends jumpsuit, but the Taylor jumpsuit has a much lower price, on sale for only $42.32.

Nothing could ever compare to Palermo’s Francesco Russo heels, but we think the Got the Look Leopard T-Strap Dress Sandals from Lulu’s come pretty close. These sandals have a similar leopard print detail on the heels that remind us of Palermo’s pricier heels, while also keeping the straps over the foot fairly simple. The biggest difference between these heels and the Francesco Russo heels is the price: these cute sandals are a steal for only $31!

This look for less wouldn’t be complete without a killer pair of turquoise shades, and the Calvin Klein Women’s Cat Eye Teal Sunglasses certainly fit the bill. Done in a similar shape and shade to Palermo’s sunnies, these sunglasses could easily pass for her exact pair. On sale for $49.99 on Bluefly.com, these Calvin Klein sunglasses will add the perfect punch of color to your white jumpsuit ensemble.

Although Olivia Palermo’s crisp white jumpsuit look cost upwards of $1,384, we were able to recreate her look for only $191.31 — that’s for two jumpsuits, a pair of leopard print sandals and Calvin Klein sunglasses! So go forth and shop, because now you have no reason not to take Palermo’s look for less!

Nicole’s Favorites: Music Edition

Whenever new music from one of my favorite artists is released online, I am the first person to jump at the opportunity to listen to it. Whether it’s a new single or a complete album, you can almost bet on it that it will be added to my playlist the day it’s released. And that’s exactly what happened today when Disclosure released their new single, “Omen,” which features none other than the great Sam Smith.

The single, which comes from Disclosure’s forthcoming album “Caracal,” debuted today in on Youtube’s Vevo with an all-new music video. While I didn’t quite understand the video, Disclosure explained in the comments that this video is part two of a four-part series, which would explain the somewhat confusing plot line and the cliffhanger to-be-continued ending. But to me, the video is not of paramount importance. To me, the song itself is what matters, and this song is a 10 out of 10.

Its hypnotic beat was the first thing to catch my attention, and it has been stuck in my head all day — granted, I have listened to it about four times today, so that could explain it. Still, Disclosure has a way of crafting songs that will, without a doubt, carve out a space in your memory and hang out for a while; from their “Latch” collaboration with Smith, to their work on “F For You” featuring Mary J. Blige, their catchy beats seem to echo in my mind like a shout in a canyon — it repeats for as long as possible. And I’m certainly not complaining!

As if the trance-inducing beat wasn’t enough, Sam Smith then graces an already almost-perfect song with his miracle of a voice, and that’s when I knew I was in love. The hook and the chorus of the song perfectly complement the hypnotic beat, while Smith’s sweet vocals create an almost tangible magic throughout the track.

If you’re looking for an upbeat song to add to your summer party playlists, this is definitely the one! Click here to watch the video, and be sure to let me know how much you love it in the comments!

Happy Listening!

XO,

Nicole

Style 101: Now in Session!

Although the height of summer is upon us, going back to school is not too far from our minds. And while we won’t give you yet another article about the best back to school fashions, we thought it would be appropriate to hold our own class — style class, that is.

That’s where our new series for Take Her Look, “Style 101,” comes in. In “Style 101,” we will be going over the basics of dressing (how to put together an outfit, how to mix prints, etc) and decoding fashion lingo so you can shop in any store and know exactly what something like a cigarette pant is and what to pair it with. Consider this a crash course in building your personal style and expanding your wardrobe, so get out your notebook and pencil, because class is in session!

In today’s “Style 101,” we will be discussing the term ‘peplum.’ Peplums, or a flared strip of material flowing outward from the waist of a garment, can be found on several articles of clothing, ranging from tops to skirts and dresses to jackets.

Garments with a peplum are universally flattering. Because the flare of material begins at the waist and extends outward over the hips, it has a tremendous narrowing effect on the waist. Peplums are also a great way to accentuate your hips and create curves on your body, since the end of the flare sits at the hips. Another way in which peplums are universally flattering is that they are a simple camouflaging tool; they can easily hide anything you may be concerned about in your stomach area while also maintaining a structured shape. So instead of wearing a shapeless tunic or t-shirt to hide your problem area, a peplum is a great alternative to hide any areas of concern without compromising shape.

If peplums sound like something your closet might be craving, there are a few ways to work a peplum into your wardrobe. Start by trying out a peplum top; peplum tops can easily be dressed down with your favorite pair of jeans or dressed up with a pencil skirt or trousers. This V-Back Lace Peplum Top from Forever 21 is the perfect way to try out a peplum; done in a beautiful navy lace, this peplum top can be worn for any occasion and paired with just about anything. And it won’t hurt your bank account either, available for only $19.80 on Forever21.com.

The V-Back Lace Peplum Top, found on Forever21.com.

Wearing a peplum jacket can be a great look for work, especially when it’s as fashionable as the Tailored Peplum Jacket by Topshop. This navy striped jacket is the perfect alternative to the traditional business blazer, as it offers a tailored, professional silhouette while still being trendy and fun. The stripes on this jacket also emphasize the effect of the peplum; its diagonal stripes converge at the waist, therefore accentuating your waist. Available for $95 at Nordstrom.com, this jacket is a great way to spice up your workwear.

The Topshop Tailored Peplum Jacket, found on Nordstrom.com.

The Topshop Tailored Peplum Jacket, found on Nordstrom.com.

Peplums also add a little bit of life to even the simplest of dresses. Take the Step by Pep Fuchsia Peplum Dress from Lulu’s, for example. The basic shape of the dress without the peplum is a bodycon tube dress; it is curve-hugging, but there is no real structure to it otherwise. Now consider the shape of the dress with the peplum; the peplum not only adds structure to the dress by emphasizing the waistline, it also adds shapes to the dress by accentuating the curve of the hip. The peplum also makes harder-to-wear styles like a bodycon dress more accessible, since it will help to conceal any problem areas. For only $29, this makes for an easy, affordable way to test out a peplum dress in your ever-expanding wardrobe.

The Step by Pep Fuchsia Peplum Dress, found on Lulus.com.

So now that you know what a peplum is, the benefits of pieces with peplums and how to wear a peplum, you really have no excuse not to try it out!

Class is dismissed!

It Takes A Village

It takes a village to raise a child, and that is certainly the case in Orchard Park, New York. According to The Huffington Post, when Elizabeth Diamond was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer in 2014, friend Laura Ruffino agreed to take in her four children if she were to lose her battle with cancer.

When Diamond passed away in April, Ruffino and her husband Rico made good on that promise. The Ruffinos, who already have two daughters, adopted Diamond’s four children, who range in age from five to 12.

Doubling the size of their family hasn’t been easy, Rico told WKBW-TV. “‘Ten years ago I didn’t think this would be my life. But if something gets thrown at you just accept the challenge and do the best you can,'” he said. But, their community has been nothing but supportive, setting up online fundraising campaigns for the family and even putting together a benefit to be held in West Seneca, New York in August, all to help the family tackle the expenses of raising now six children.

The online YouCaring campaign explains, “‘This family is doing EVERYTHING in their power to make the Diamond daughters feel loved and part of the family.'” So far, The Huffington Post reports that the community’s efforts have raked in $37,000.

Thank you, Ruffino family, for showing us all that true friendship is selfless.

Black and white and seen all over the world! Amal Clooney made her way into the headlines yet again with another gorgeous look, this time a black and white polka dot look worn on a date with husband George Clooney in Lake Como earlier this week.

According to The Daily Mail, Mrs. Clooney stepped out in a pair of black and white polka dot shorts from Dolce and Gabbana’s spring/summer 2015 collection. She paired her classic look with a black top that showed a peek of skin on the back and a black fringe clutch.

If you’re thinking of running out to purchase these exact shorts, you might want to hold off — not only are they no longer available, they also sold for a whopping $595! But there are a couple of great alternatives to take Clooney’s classic look for less, and we even found two great tops to go with your stylish new shorts!

The Take Me Away Polka Dot Shorts by Keepsake the Label not only offer a similar polka dot style, they also have a flared leg, giving them a universally flattering skirt-like silhouette. The polka dots on these cute shorts are done in a watercolor style, giving them a softer, almost grey appearance. Available for $120 on Nordstrom.com, these shorts also have a matching top also for $120 so you can pair the pieces together a fun faux-romper look!
