Lady Gaga has been known to shed light on important social issues, so it should come as no surprise that the pop star is using her talent yet again to literally give voice to another important issue of our day: campus rape culture.
According to HerCampus, Lady Gaga has recently released a new song for a documentary on campus rape culture called “Till It Happens to You.” The track, co-written by Gaga and Diane Warren, was “inspired by the singer’s struggle with the aftermath of being sexually assaulted by a record producer when she was nineteen years old.”
HerCampus says that the song will not only be featured in the documentary The Hunting Ground, a film that details “rape culture and sexual assault on college campuses,” it will also be featured in “a PSA video about campus sexual assault directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starring Nikki Reed.”
Gaga told of her own experience with sexual assault in a 2014 interview with Howard Stern, explaining that she did not want to be defined by the traumatizing event. She went on to assert her strength over the experience, saying “I’ll be damned if somebody’s gonna say that every creatively intelligent thing that I ever did is all boiled down to one [expletive] that did that to me.”
Thank you, Lady Gaga, for not only shedding light on this important issue, but also teaching us that victims shouldn’t be defined by their circumstances.
