Leslie Jones slays in the new Ghostbusters revamp and even slayed on the red carpet in a stunning Christian Siriano gown after several designers turned down the opportunity to work with her. But apparently, that’s not enough to keep the haters away.
According to the Huffington Post, Jones has been on the receiving end of incredibly harsh — and completely uncalled for — comments that are racially-charged and criticize her appearance. While the Ghostbusters star didn’t hesitate to call out the trolls by retweeting their comments on Twitter, some of which referred to her as an “ape” and as “extremely ugly,” Jones also shared how hurtful such caustic words were to her, says the Huffington Post, explaining that they made her feel “numb.”
“I don’t know how to feel,” she tweeted. “I’m numb. Actually numb. I see the words and pics and videos. Videos y’all. Meaning people took time to sprew hate.”
She continued expressing her disbelief this way, according to the Huffington Post: “As much as you want to thinks actors ain’t human I want to give you something to think about. I work off pure passion for this game … I’m more human and real than you fucking think.I work my ass off. I’m not different than any of you who has a dream to do what they love.”
Although Jones held her own against her haters, many friends and co-stars joined her to fight against the negativity, tweeting their love to the Saturday Night Live star with the hashtag, “#LoveForLeslieJ.”
The Huffington Post says that stars like Sophia Bush, Anna Kendrick and Olivia Munn all tweeted their support to the actress. Ghostbusters director Paul Feig also joined in with a tweet of his own, according to the Huffington Post:
Fellow comedian Loni Love called on other comics to stand in solidarity with Jones, according to the Huffington Post, tweeting:
While the Huffington Post shows that many jumped to Jones’ defense, perhaps Jones voiced her frustration and sadness most eloquently when she tweeted, “Stop letting the ignorant people be the loud ones. Y’all I got more love than hate but they louder. Fuck that be louder.”
Let’s let our love be louder for Leslie.
