Sometimes, all it takes is a few minutes to convey a very powerful message.
According to Glamour, Amber Heard — who divorced actor Johnny Depp in May and filed for a domestic violence restraining order shortly after — partnered with the #GirlGaze Project to do a short PSA on domestic abuse. In the two-minute video, Glamour says Heard is “revealing, raw, and honest as she opens up about her experience with domestic abuse.”
From explaining how victims usually cannot believe that they are being subjected to such treatment to detailing how complex abuse situations can be, Glamour says Heard said that the first step in removing yourself from the toxic situation is telling someone you feel safe with.
“It’s the only way that people are going to feel comfortable in coming forward, raising their voices, standing up for themselves, is if we change the system in place that keeps them quiet,” she said in the video, according to Glamour. “Speak up. Speak up. Raise your voice. Your voice is the most powerful thing, and we, together, as women standing shoulder to shoulder, cannot and will not any longer accept silence.”
The project was created by #GirlGaze, a multi-platform project that seeks to show “how girls see the work” by supporting female photographers.
