Take Her Look

Seattle in December may not always be the best weather-wise, but things got a little hotter when singer Ciara stopped by on Dec. 15.

The singer and brand ambassador for Topshop visited the Downtown Nordstrom to celebrate the two retailers’ partnership. Wearing pieces from Topshop, Ciara stunned in a top with a plunging neckline which she paired with a leather midi skirt and black pumps.

Ciara’s chic all-black ensemble may look like it costs an arm and a leg, but it is actually quite affordable. In fact, we’ve found the exact pieces she’s wearing (which are all from Topshop, naturally) so you can take her look, and we’ve even found the perfect black pumps to pair with it. Read on for the results!

After following a lead from Topshop’s Twitter, we were able to find Ciara’s top, which is actually a bodysuit. Its deep neckline will frame your face while also creating a sexy look. Ciara’s Square Plunge Bodysuit will form the basis of your new outfit, and it will only cost $35.

Ciara paired her bodysuit with a leather skirt — the Topshop Leather Midi Skirt, to be exact — and you can too, for $180. The zippers placed on an angle at the hip are not only cool, edgy details, they are also shape-enhancers, accentuating your natural curves.

Completing your sexy and stylish ensemble is a pair of black pumps, and we found the perfect pair in the form of the Aldo Waycien Lizard Pumps from DSW. The subtle lizard print invokes the pattern on Ciara’s pumps, making them the perfect alternative to her heels. These heels will complete your look for only $59.95.

While this may not be a look for less, this outfit is certainly affordable, thanks to the reasonable prices at Topshop. With our look-alike pumps, you can take Ciara’s entire look for only $274.95.

Take Her Look [For Less]

While Sunday night’s Emmys honored the most talented actors and actresses in television, the Emmys red carpet payed homage to the style of the small screen’s biggest stars. And as if their red carpet looks weren’t stylish enough, their after-party style was even better.

Take Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland. After wearing a gorgeous wine-colored Zac Posen gown on the Emmys red carpet, she opted for a black Kaufmanfranco swing dress for the Emmys after party, says InStyle. Her sweet little black dress featured a high neckline and an oversized bow at the back of her neck. She completed her look with some silver jewelry and black strappy heels.

Hyland took to the Emmys after party in style, but her style comes at a price. A similar Kaufmanfranco dress retailed originally for $2,995 at Forward, but if you love her post-award show style, we’ve found all the pieces necessary to recreate her look for less than $200. Read on for the results!

While nothing will ever quite compare to her bow-back Kaufmanfranco frock, we thought the High Neck Crepe Swing Dress from Missguided certainly came close. Featuring a similar high neckline and billowy silhouette, this dress could easily pass for Hyland’s look. But, the best part is that this look-alike dress is available at a fraction of the price, coming in at only $40.

Black strappy heels will complete our look for less, and there is no better pair for the job than the Jessica Simpson Sabreeni heels from 6pm. These heels have a strap pattern at the toe reminiscent of Hyland’s heels, but they also feature tiny studs to give the shoe an edgier feel. These sassy heels will finish off your new outfit for a mere $49.99.

Sarah Hyland’s Emmys after-party look may have been pricey, but you don’t have to spend like a star to achieve a similar look — we were able to recreate her look from head to toe for only $89.99. Add a silver cuff and earrings, and you’ll have successfully taken Hyland’s look for less.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Wearing an outfit composed from head-to-toe with pieces from one of your favorite designers sounds like the stuff of every fashionista’s dreams. That dream was a reality for Kiernan Shipka, who attended Coach’s 75th Anniversary runway show on Sept. 15 at the Highline in New York City wearing an outfit composed solely of Coach pieces.

According to InStylethe Mad Men alumna attended the show wearing a black and white floral printed button-down top, which she paired with a leather-trimmed mini skirt. She completed her look with a black and white crossbody bag and black peep-toe ankle booties.

Because we know that Shipka’s outfit is composed of only Coach pieces, it should come as no surprise that this amounts to a pricey look — her crossbody alone, the Swagger 20 with Chain, totals $395. If you love her entire look but can’t bear to know the lofty price of each individual piece, we’ve recreated her outfit from head to toe for less than the price of her Coach crossbody. Read on for the results!

First on our shopping list is a black and white printed button-down, and the Diamond Print Shirt from Forever 21 is the perfect replacement for Shipka’s Coach piece. Featuring a similarly-sized print, this collared top will easily pass for the Coach shirt while only costing a fraction of its price, coming it at a mere $22.90.

Finding a leather-trimmed mini skirt to rival Shipka’s Coach style was no easy task, but we thought that the Patch Pocket Mini Skirt from Forever 21 came pretty close. Offering faux leather banding at the waist and hip pockets reminiscent of the Coach skirt, this piece will easily combine with the printed top to recreate Shipka’s look for only $17.90.

One of the essential pieces of Shipka’s look was her black and white crossbody, and although nothing compares to a genuine Coach purse, we thought the Anne Klein New Recruit Perforated Crossbody was a good alternative. This crossbody not only delivers a similar silhouette, it also offers a chain strap reminiscent of Shipka’s pricey Coach style. But this crossbody will only set you back $47.99 as compared to the Coach’s $395 price tag.

Black peep-toe ankle booties will cap off recreated head-to-toe ensemble, and Aldo has the perfect pair in the form of the Jutras bootie from Heels.com. These booties will not only offer a style comparable to Shipka’s pair, they will also add a bit of height to your overall look with their 4 1/2 stiletto heel. Coming it at $89.99, these shoes will be the biggest splurge of our entire look for less ensemble.

Kiernan Shipka’s all-over Coach ensemble was certainly enviable, but we definitely didn’t envy her crossbody’s $395 price tag. Our look-alike outfit, however, will allow you to recreate her entire look from head to toe for only $178.48.

She Leads, You Follow: ‘Sleeping With Other People’ Screening Edition

Although summer is slowly coming to a close, screenings of new summer movies show no signs of slowing down. On Monday, August 24, stars showed up in style to the screening of  Sleeping With Other People West Hollywood, California. And of course, each look was better than the next.

First to wow us at the screening was Kirsten Dunst, who wore an all-black Louis Vuitton top and skirt combination according to InStyle. She paired her paneled top and leather skirt with black pumps and silver earrings.

Alison Brie took to the red carpet in a white semi-sheer dress with black panels at the waist. She completed her look with silver sandals by Aldo and an equally shiny new ring on her finger — her brand new engagement ring.

Lizzy Caplan capped off our favorite looks of the night, wearing what InStyle reports as a black tropical print dress by Proenza Schouler. Caplan took her look to the next level with powder blue lace-up heels by Bionda Castana, while keeping her jewelry to a minimum with gold earrings.

Although these leading ladies are dressed up for a film screening, there are certain things we can learn from their looks that we can apply to our own everyday dressing.

  1. Monochromatic can be exciting – Kirsten Dunst’s monochromatic number shows us just how visually stimulating an outfit done in all one color can be. Her outfit incorporates different textures, such as the open mesh of her top and the diamond pattern on her skirt, that combine to create a very interesting look. If you are afraid of wearing an all-black look for fear of seeming boring, just remember that the outfit is only as interesting as the details it features. So be sure to mix different textures (like lace and leather, for example) to achieve a cohesive, yet intriguing look that will be far from boring.
  2. Panels, Panels, Panels – The importance of colorblocked panels cannot be stressed enough, and Alison Brie’s black and white dress is only another example of the miracles colorblocked panels can work in an outfit. The black panels on her dress cinch in right at her natural waist, creating the illusion of an even narrower midsection. Panels like these are a great camouflage tool, so if you are looking to incorporate them into your wardrobe, look for contrasting panels (black on white, white on black or any combination you like!) at the natural waist of tops, dresses and even high-waisted skirts that will make your waist seem tiny.
  3. Dare to be different – Lizzy Caplan paired her tropical frock with a very trendy lace-up heel done in an eye-catching sky blue. Shoes like these end up acting as a statement piece because they are so different from the rest of the outfit. But notice, however, that the blue of her shoes is also featured in small amounts in the print of her dress; this ends up tying the statement shoe back to the dress, creating a cohesive look. If you decide to go for a statement shoe in an outfit, make sure that it makes sense with your look; this could mean taking Caplan’s lead and wearing the shoe in a color that plays a supporting role in the print you’re wearing. Or it could mean wearing a more subdued, neutral outfit so you can make your new bright heels the main focus of your look.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Comic-Con San Diego has officially wrapped up its four-day convention, and although the star-studded event has come to an end, we are all still in awe of the fashion from those in attendance.

In what PopSugar is reporting as one of the “sexier” Comic-Con red carpets ever, celebrities from Jennifer Lawrence to Maisie Williams to Kat Graham brought their A-game, showing little peeks of skin via cutouts, plunging necklines and thigh-high slits.

But one of the simplest, yet sexiest red carpet looks came from Glee‘s Lea Michele, who walked the red carpet in a white crop top and skater skirt by Jonathan Simkhai, which she paired with bright red and blue color-blocked heels.

Michele’s white-hot summery look seems simple, but the price tag of her top and skirt prove to be anything but simple — both pieces retail for $325, bringing her outfit total to $650 excluding the price of her shoes (to purchase Michele’s exact pieces, visit  Intermixonline.com for her top and fwrd.com for her flare skirt). But if you want to take her look for less, you are in luck! THL found the perfect pieces to recreate Michele’s crop top ensemble so it’s affordable enough to find its way into your wardrobe!

Since crop tops are all the rage these days, finding a simple white cropped tank was a cinch. The Lulu’s Make a Seam Ivory Crop Top is the perfect cropped style to mimic Michele’s Simkhai top, offering a similar neckline and seaming at the bust to provide a sleek, tailored look. This top comes in at a fraction of the Simkhai top for only $36 at Lulus.com.

The Drifting Away Together Skirt from Tobi completes the top and skirt set, offering a voluminous skater skirt style that pulls away from the hip, creating a narrow waistline. This skirt could easily pass for Michele’s Simkhai skater, and the best part is that it only costs $52 from Tobi.com.

Finding an equally stunning color-blocked heel to compete with Michele’s cute kicks was no easy task, but Aldo stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park with the Deserto High-Heel Sandal. These sandals are available in a fuchsia colorblock, as well as a blue colorblock, allowing you to decide which color from Michele’s heels to work into your duplicate look. These stylish heels won’t set you back much as they are on sale for $45 at AldoShoes.com — basically, this means you should get both pairs!

If Lea Michele’s Comic-Con look was on your style radar, now you can take her look for less with THL’s duplicate look; incorporating pieces from Lulu’s, Tobi and Aldo, THL’s look comes in at a reasonable $133, while Michele’s look totals $650 for only her top and skirt. Now you can look like a star and save money at the same time!

Take Her Look [For Less]

This week, actress Melissa McCarthy stepped out in New York City to promote her new fashion line Melissa McCarthy Seven7 (which we are SO excited for!). And of course, to promote her new fashion line, she made quite the fashion statement in an all-neutral outfit with a yellow caged heel from Zara.

These Zara heels, the perfect complement to her pale blue-grey top and skirt combo, are priced at $99. By keeping the entirety of her outfit neutral, it allows for her heels, a sunflower yellow, to be the statement piece of her ensemble.

If McCarthy’s Zara heels are just out of your price range, there are some other similar options. But be sure to keep in mind, however, how you will wear these shoes — if you notice, the brightness and saturation of the McCarthy’s heels is proportional to the brightness and saturation of her entire outfit. This means that the color of the yellow is neither too overpowering nor too rich to be paired with her soft neutral attire.

To mimic McCarthy’s caged-heel style, try a look like the BCBGeneration Preize Patent Sandal. Although this heel comes in a brighter yellow, the straps mimic those of McCarthy’s Zara heels and can be a great addition to a bright summer wardrobe. Let’s not fail to mention that this shoe comes in at about $39 cheaper than McCarthy’s heels, retailing for $59.95 at DSW.

If the BCBGeneration heel is a little too bright for your taste, another option that is closer in color to McCarthy’s Zara heels is the Ibenama High-Heel Sandals from Aldo. Although these heels offer a more simple design, the paler shade of yellow allows for them to be mixed and matched in your wardrobe that a brighter heel might not allow for. These beauties are priced $29 cheaper than the Zara heels, retailing for $70.

So if Melissa McCarthy inspired you to invite yellow into your life (and your wardrobe!), look no further than these great options to add to your shoe collection!
