Winter learns body acceptance from ‘Modern Family’ co-star

It takes a wise, knowledgable teacher to impart a valuable lesson to their student. And that’s exactly what Sofia Vergara became to Ariel Winter when Winter struggled to accept her body.

According to Motto by TIME, the 18-year-old Modern Family actress told that Vergara was a role model of sorts to her after struggling with her developing body.

“She could see that I was struggling a little bit with how to deal with my body, and was always trying to give me advice, like, ‘Here are some brands that would look good on our body type,’ or ‘Wear whatever you want, and feel good about yourself,'” Winter said of Vergara.

Adding to her difficulties adjusting were social media naysayers, says Motto, which Winter said was not only “the worst” for her self-esteem, but also a constant struggle to not succumb to the online negativity.

“It was hard for me in the beginning to deal with people’s comments and deal with everybody having an opinion on absolutely everything I did,” she said, according to Motto. “It was hard for me to not fall prey to wanting to change the way I felt and the way I did things and the way I looked because of what other people said.”

However, with the help of her older sister, Shanelle Workman, and Vergara, Motto says she was able to combat the criticism, learning that it’s only her happiness that matters most:

“But as I got older, I started to realize that as long as I’m positive in my life and as long as I feel good about my decisions and stick to how I feel and the things I want to do, that’s what’s most important,” Winter shared. “And that’s what’s going to get me through in life.”

She Leads, You Follow: Jingle Ball Edition

Every great holiday season begins with a great playlist, and Z100’s 2015 Jingle Ball on Dec. 11 happened to do just that, delivering some of the hottest music from the biggest stars all in one place. New York City’s Madison Square Garden played host to the likes of Charlie Puth, Demi Lovato and even Nick Jonas as they ushered in the holiday season in the city with their most successful songs of the year. An added benefit of the star-studded event: the red carpet fashion prior to the show.

Setting the red carpet ablaze in a white-hot look was “Same Old Love” singer Selena Gomez, who attended the Jingle Ball concert in a white strapless bodycon dress. She paired her look with black pumps while styling her hair in long, loose waves.

Following suit in a red ensemble was Modern Family‘s Ariel Winter. Winter took to Jingle Ball in a cutout halter jumpsuit, which she paired with a metallic clutch and heels.

Adding a pop of color to the Jingle Ball red carpet was Kelsea Ballerini, who opted for a black tank and a Jay Godfrey turquoise skirt. The “Love Me Like You Mean It” singer polished off her ensemble with colorful Alejandra G. lace-up pumps, says Yahoo.

Although these ladies are dressed for the biggest musical event of the holiday season, there are certain things we can learn from their look to apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Simple is stunning – Gomez’s white bodycon dress is certainly sexy, but it’s also quite simple. The dress has a very streamlined silhouette and has no embellishment, but it still manages to capture our attention. This is because it fits like a glove and accentuates her curves. When you shop for dresses, blouses, pants or skirts, be sure that each piece fits these three main points on your body: your bust, your natural waist and your hips. This means making sure that there is no pulling at the bust and hips, while also making sure that the waist fits snugly around your natural waist.
  2. Jump into jumpsuits – Winter’s ensemble reminds us that jumpsuits are a great option for holiday parties. This jumpsuit’s festive cranberry color makes it perfect for the holidays, and when paired with gold accessories (as Winter did), it makes it all the more ready for any party that may come your way. If you want to try a jumpsuit this season, be sure to pay attention to the details of the garment to determine where and how it can be worn. For example, a jumpsuit with cutouts like Winter’s may not be appropriate for a family gathering, but it could be fun for a night with friends.
  3. Add a splash of color – Ballerini may have opted for a bright color that’s not normally associated with the holidays, but the pop of color is a nice way to break the sea of red and green. If you want to try a pop of color this holiday season but don’t want to seem out of place, try it in smaller amounts; a turquoise necklace or bright pink pumps paired with an all-black ensemble is a chic, but subtle way to add some color into your holiday ensembles.

Winter Fights Instagram Critics

Female celebrities have long been subject to critical comments on their appearances, and the onslaught of numerous social media sites has only ignited further criticism. Modern Family star Ariel Winter has recently faced such negative commentary, and she took it upon herself to fire back at her critics.

According to an article Entertainment Weekly reposted from People, Winter, 17, recently posted a photo of her and her two young nieces on a beach in which she wore a bandeau-style bikini while her nieces wore baseball hats and life vests.

The seemingly-innocent photo garnered a deluge of negative comments, prompting Winter to post a response photo: an image of the back of a woman’s legs “which are marked like a ruler with words like ‘provocative’ and ‘slut’ to allude to an association between hemlines and perception.”

In the photo’s caption, Winter wrote, “Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl’s skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for.” She continued in her post to say that she normally does not address the mean comments said about her online, but in this instance, she felt compelled speak out for other girls who have been bullied in this way.

Winter closed her post by telling her fans that they are beautiful and what they wear is only a form of self expression, not a means for “asking for anything.”

“Celebrate you,” she wrote, “and don’t let anyone’s comments allow you to think less of yourself. Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!”

Yes, we do have to stick together. Thanks Ariel Winter for speaking up against Internet bullies and asserting your own worth.

She Leads, You Follow: Just Jared’s Way Too Wonderland

With summer drawing to a close, autumn is coming ever so quickly and bringing with it all our favorite things associated with the season, from fall fashion to fall television. But while Just Jared’s Way Too Wonderland event on August 27 celebrated the arrival of animated series Ever After High: Way Too Wonderland to Netflix, celebrities in attendance held on to what’s left of summer with their colorful fashion choices.

Mad Men star Kiernan Shipka showed up to the Greystone Manor Supperclub in West Hollywood, California in a whimsical pink dress, featuring a sweet ruffled neckline and matching hemline. She paired her fun frock with what InStyle says are multicolored Valentino heels done in green, orange, blue and purple.

Arriving in an equally cheery outfit was Modern Family star Ariel Winter, who wore a bright yellow top and an asymmetrical skirt in a matching hue. She paired her eye-popping look with simple nude strappy heels and a metallic clutch.

Although Shipka and Winter are dressed to impress at an event teeming with celebrities, there are some things we can learn from their style and apply to the way we dress everyday:

  1. Ruffles aren’t just pretty – Kiernan Shipka’s ladylike dress features ruffles at the neck and hemline of the dress, but don’t be quick to dismiss them as merely a girly detail. These ruffles actually act as shape-creators, giving structure to a dress with a very straight cut. The ruffle at the neckline serves to emphasize her shoulders and frame her face, drawing attention up toward her collarbone and shoulders. The ruffle at the hemline flares out just slightly, balancing out the width created at her shoulders while also enhancing the curve of the dress at her hips. Ruffles like these on a dress or top/skirt combination are great ways to use clothing to trick the eye and make others see proportionate, structured silhouettes without doing too much work.
  2. Nude heels and high waists are a girl’s best friend – Wearing a blouse tucked into a high-waisted skirt, Ariel Winter not only showed us how to effectively define a waist in a monochromatic outfit, she also showed us how to create the illusion of long legs by wearing simple nude heels that blend into her skin tone. Nude heels are a great way to fool the eye into seeing one long, uninterrupted legline, which makes the legs look even longer and leaner than they are. Pair this with cinching in your waist at its natural location, and not only will your legs look like they go on for miles, you will also look taller and leaner in two easy steps. What’s not to love about that?!
