Take Her Look [For Less]

Red carpets are often reserved for movie premieres and award shows, but on October 12, the red carpet was rolled out for Cosmopolitan magazine’s 50th Birthday Celebration in West Hollywood, California. And with an abundance of celebrities — from Olivia Culpo to Maria Menounos — attending the event, there was no shortage of great fashion. But our favorite look happened to come courtesy of the always-fashionable Sarah Hyland.

The Modern Family star stepped out at Ysabel in what InStyle says is a sleek black pantsuit by DSquared2. Going for a sexier look, Hyland opted to go sans blouse, completing her look with a layered choker at her neck and sheer houndstooth pumps by Nicholas Kirkwood.

Hyland’s red carpet style is certainly the object of our envy, but its price is less than enviable. Her DSquared2 suit — which seems to be a single-button version of the Sergeant Suit — costs a lofty $2,960. Her Nicholas Kirkwood Prism Lace Houndstooth pumps also cost a pretty penny, totaling $598.26. With her outfit costing $3,558.26, taking her look for our own may be out of the question. Or is it? We set out to find all the pieces necessary to take her look for under $200, and the results may surprise you. Read on to see how we did!

First on our shopping list was a blazer worthy to serve as a substitute for Hyland’s DSquared2 number, and we found it in the form of the Satin Lapel Tailored Blazer from Missguided. This blazer features a single-button style and deep v-neckline reminiscent of Hyland’s jacket, while its satin lapel also invokes the sheen of her DSquared2 look. For as similar as these blazers are, they differ in one important area: price. This Missguided piece will only set you back $59.90.

To complete our pantsuit look are the ASOS Crop Trousers. Featuring a similar slim-cut and cropped-leg silhouette, these trousers will easily pass for Hyland’s DSquared trousers, but will only cost you $39.41.

Finding houndstooth pumps to compete with Hyland’s Nicholas Kirkwood style was no easy task, but we finally landed on the Martina Pointed Toe Pumps from Nine West. Although these pumps aren’t sheer, they feature an exact houndstooth pattern to replicate Hyland’s heels. These Nine West heels will polish off your outfit for only $59.99.

Although Sarah Hyland’s Cosmopolitan 50th Birthday Celebration look cost $3,558.26, we were able to recreate her entire look for less — a whole $3,392.06 less, with our look-alike ensemble will only set you back $166.20.

She Leads, You Follow

Celebrities often take a leap right off the fashion ledge; they push boundaries in their fashion choices and make it look quite effortless, leaving all of us style novices to look on in awe and admiration of their flawless style.  The “She Leads, You Follow” series will examine how our favorite ladies put together their looks so we, too, can look as fashionably flawless as they do.

Our first “fashion leader” is none other than Mrs. Carter herself, Beyoncé. The Queen of the Beyhive was spotted in May wearing an orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink DSquared2 leather shorts, which she paired with bright magenta heels and a turquoise satchel purse.

Although it seems like a fashion misstep to incorporate four distinct colors into one outfit, Beyoncé shows that it is more than possible to make such bold colors work together to create a cohesive ensemble. Here’s why this outfit works:

  1. The brightness and saturation of her shirt and shorts are equal – Both her shirt and her shorts are of the same intensity and richness, allowing them to complement each other instead of compete with each other.
  2. Her shoes are far enough away from the pink of her shorts to not compete with it – Beyoncé’s magenta shoes may be brighter than her pink shorts, but because they are equally rich in color and far enough away from her shorts, they do not compete with her shorts and make it look like she got dressed in the dark and accidentally mismatched two different shades of pink.
  3. Her turquoise bag is also of equal saturation and brightness to the other colors in her outfit – Although the turquoise seems like a random color to add to this ensemble, it breaks up the pink and orange pairing, giving it a sort of color-blocking effect. By adding an earring in a similar color, Beyoncé is able to tie in the turquoise bag to create a unified outfit.

Sounds easy enough, right? Just remember: the color you pair do not have to match, they have to go, and they should only match each other in brightness and saturation. And most of all, remember to wear it with confidence — all fashion risks look better when worn with confidence!
