She Leads, You Follow: ‘The Prophet’ Screening Edition

The Bing Theatre at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art played host to a screening of GKIDS’ Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet on Wednesday, July 29, and the event drew a crowd of high-profile, well-dressed celebrity guests.

Salma Hayek, who not only produced the film but starred in it as Kamila, graced the red carpet in what People reports was a black tuxedo-inspired Balenciaga dress which she paired with black Gucci heels. She completed her look with a silver clutch, a silver broach, and silver earrings, while keeping her hair simple in a sleek half-updo.

Following Hayek on the red carpet was Eva Longoria, who stunned in a cobalt blue bodycon dress that featured a sheer mesh panel flanked by white stripes at the waist, which she paired with a black clutch and black pumps. Longoria topped off her look with a chic top knot and dramatic eye makeup.

Although Hayek and Longoria are decked out for a red carpet event, there are still some things we can take away from their red carpet looks and apply in our everyday lives.

  1. Menswear can be feminine – Salma Hayek’s tuxedo-inspired dress shows us just how versatile menswear can be. This dress has satin lapels just like a men’s tuxedo jacket, but it is transformed into a feminine piece not only because it is a dress, but also because of the shape of the dress. Shape is created in this dress by a thick half-belt that closes the blazer-like construction of the dress and defines her waist; this also creates a quasi-slit in the front, adding a little bit of sexiness to frock. To incorporate menswear into your style, try a blazer to start; look for blazers that feel a little more masculine, meaning they have a stronger shoulder, a thicker lapel or a boyfriend cut throughout the body of the jacket. Then, to inject some femininity into the look, pair the blazer with a girly floral or a dainty lace top.
  2. Mesh makes shape – Eva Longoria’s dress shows us that mesh is not only good way to share a peek of skin in an outfit, but it is also a great way to create shape — that is, if it is strategically placed. The mesh on Longoria’s cobalt frock is placed in a demi-chevron pattern that falls right at her natural waistline, thus accentuating her waist and creating shape in a dress that otherwise lacks shape-creating seams. Having the mesh outlined in white panels further emphasizes her waist. When shopping for mesh-embellished pieces, make sure that the mesh does double duty, meaning that the mesh is placed in such a way that it will create shape while also showing some skin. The easiest way to ensure that your mesh embellishments work with your body is by taking Longoria’s lead and wearing the mesh as a waist-defining structure on the garment. Shape can also be created via mesh panels at the shoulders to give the illusion of broader shoulders or panels at the hips to create curves on your bottom half.

There is no fabric more versatile than denim — it can be worn in the form of jeans, jackets and shirts, and on Wednesday, Elle Fanning showed us that denim can also be worn as cute summer dress.

The actress was spotted on Wednesday in Los Angeles wearing a denim A-line dress, which she paired with a red Gucci leather shoulder bag and beige espadrille flats featuring fun burger and fries embroidery.

Fanning’s sweet denim dress is perfect for those hazy, hot and humid summer days when its way too hot to wear anything form-fitting. Although the designer of her dress is unknown, The Daily Mail reports that Fanning’s Gucci crossbody comes in at a steep $2,490, so we decided to recreate Fanning’s entire look for less, a lot less than $2,490 — we set out to replicate her look for under $200. Read on for the results!

The first order of business was to find a similar dress to Fanning’s sweet A-line number, and we immediately found a cute alternative from our friends at Lulu’s. The Rhythm Birkin Blue Chambray Skater Dress offers a similar silhouette to Fanning’s frock, while the denim comes in a similar color and wash, making it the perfect dress to duplicate Fanning’s look. This dress even has a little surprise in the back: an oval-shaped back cutout that ties into a bow! This copycat style is available for $86 on Lulus.com.

No bag can ever compare to a Gucci purse, but we came across an equally vibrant crossbody to compete with Fanning’s. The Carmel Crossbody Wristlet from Charming Charlie delivers the same striking red as Fanning’s Gucci bag, but it’s much more versatile since it can be worn as a crossbody or as a wristlet/clutch. This purse is sure to add the necessary pop of color to our copycat look, and it’s available at Charming Charlie for only $19.

Espadrille flats complete our look for less, but in searching for a similar pair of flats, we actually found Fanning’s exact pair! Fanning is wearing Jason Polan Original Burger & Fries espadrilles from Soludos.com, a footwear company based in Soho, New York that specializes in espadrilles and summer footwear. Fanning’s Burger & Fries style is available in the sand color she’s sporting, as well as an appropriately named ‘mustard’ color for only $65.

Instead of shelling out $2,490 to purchase the same Gucci bag as Elle Fanning, you can recreate her whole outfit for under $200 — $170, to be exact! So if you love Fanning’s look, head over to Lulu’s, Soludos and Charming Charlie to pick up these pieces to replicate her summery look for yourself!

Take Her Look [For Less]

If you thought monochromatic was boring, Selena Gomez just proved you wrong. EOnline reported yesterday that Gomez was spotted in New York City earlier this week wearing an all black and white ensemble upon the release of her latest single, “Good For You,” and she showed us all that black and white is certainly good for her!

Gomez wore a black and white Balmain crop top (which she actually wore backwards so the zipper detail was in the front), pairing the top with high-waisted L’Agence trousers, Saint Laurent pointy-toe booties, a Gucci crossbody bag and Saint Laurent sunglasses.

While Gomez looks stunning in this outfit, what is perhaps most stunning is how much this complete outfit costs. EOnline reports that the completed look totaled $3,311, with her shoes alone making up a third of the price at $1,050! But, if you want to take Gomez’s look for less, you are in luck – we set out to recreate her entire look for only $150, and what we found may shock you!

The first order of business was finding a black and white crop top that was even remotely close to Gomez’s $611 Balmain top, which was no easy task. But, we managed to find a similar color-blocked style at Tobi — the Cross it Over Crop Top offers a black and white colorblock look with a high neckline reminiscent of Gomez’s Balmain look, but it has some cutouts that Gomez’s top does not have. What this top also has that Gomez’ top doesn’t is a small price tag: this top comes in at a reasonable $44!

Finding high-waisted black trousers sounds like it should be easy, but it actually was the hardest part of the process. After some searching, THL finally landed on the Trouser We Go Black High-Waisted Pants from Lulu’s. Although this trousers have the same high-waistline, they do not have the same wide-leg look, but it still creates a chic look nonetheless. These fitted trousers come in at $37, compared to Gomez’s $295 pair.

Because Gomez’s $1,050 Saint Laurent booties were completely covered by her trousers, we decided to go for a simple pointy-toe pump instead. We found these classic faux leather pointy-toe pumps from Forever 21 for only $19.90 to mimic the shape of Gomez’s booties without actually seeing the rest of the shoe.

Gomez’s logo-embossed $980 Gucci crossbody bag certainly cannot be duplicated, so we opted for a simple brown faux leather crossbody with a knotted detail on the front flap. This bag has a similar rich cognac tone to Gomez’s Gucci bag, but it definitely does not have the same price tag, coming it at only $22.90 at Forever 21.

Dark-tinted aviators complete the duplicate look for only $5.90 at Forever 21 — who could tell that these sunglasses aren’t the same $375 Saint Laurent glasses that Gomez is wearing?!

THL set out to recreate Selena Gomez’s $3,311 monochromatic look for less than $150, so how did we do? Our pieces from Tobi, Lulu’s and Forever 21 totaled only $129.70, affording this pricey look to all those who admire it! So if you love Gomez’s look but couldn’t get past the price, take our lead and try out some of our recommendations! Happy shopping!
