#GearUp to prevent sexual violence

Imagine being 18 years old, throwing on your favorite pair of skinny jeans and leaving to meet your 45-year old married driving instructor for your first lesson.

But instead of learning how to drive, your instructor rips off one leg of your jeans, and rapes you.

You tell your parents, who pursue legal action, and soon the instructor is arrested and convicted of rape. But, he later appeals his sentence, only to have the original ruling overturned because the judge thinks that, because you were wearing tight jeans, you had to have helped him remove your pants, making the act consensual.

This is not just a story — this very thing happened to a young girl in Italy in the 1990s, and for the past 17 years, Peace Over Violence has organized its annual Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April to commemorate Sexual Violence Awareness Month, according to the cause’s website.

The campaign originated from the events that ensued after the perpetrator’s sentence reversal: “The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it,” says Denim Day’s site.

Since its inception, wearing jeans on Denim Day “has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.”

But to further spread their message, the campaign has had a significant amount of help from GUESS? and the GUESS? Foundation: in 2014, the brand made Denim Day their first “chain-wide in-store, digital and online philanthropic marketing campaign that spanned across its GUESS, G by GUESS and GUESS Factory brands,” according to the campaign website’s partnership page.

In May 2015, the GUESS Foundation expanded the reach of the campaign beyond the 400 stores that participated the previous year, bringing the cause to Italy for the first-ever Denim Day in Europe.

This year’s Denim Day is set for Wednesday, April 27, and besides wearing denim to stand up to sexual violence, you can register, pledge and donate to show your allegiance to the cause.

Once you register and take the pledge to combat sexual violence, be sure to join the conversation on social media by using the hashtags #GearUp and #DenimDay to help spread the campaign’s message that, “THERE IS NO EXCUSE AND NEVER AN INVITATION TO RAPE.”

Take Her Look [For Less]

Jessica Alba has enjoyed tremendous success not only as an actress, but also as a business woman, especially with the recent prosperity of her company, The Honest Company. And her success with her ‘Honest’ products is about to grow with the Sept. 9 launch of her Honest Beauty Skincare and Makeup line.

According to The Daily MailAlba celebrated the launch of the line with a party at the Trump Soho Hotel in New York City, and she was the image of an ‘honest’ beauty. Wearing what InStyle reports was a Jonathan Saunders geometric-patterned lace overlay dress, Alba was a vision in a soft blush with a touch of bright pink at her feet, sporting suede pointed toe pumps in the eye-catching hue.

Alba’s Jonathan Saunders dress makes us blush with envy, but if you want this dress as much as we do, it may not be as accessible as it appears. The Daily Mail says that this dress is part of Jonathan Saunders’ Resort 2016 collection, making it currently unavailable to the public. However, even when this dress hits stores, its price may be a deterrent, as other Jonathan Saunders dresses start on Net-a-Porter for a lofty $1,085. But if you are neither willing to wait for the real deal nor willing to shell out upwards of $1,000 for this sweet style, we’ve found all the pieces necessary to recreate Alba’s entire look for less. Read on for the results.

Finding a lace style to rival the Jonathan Saunders frock was no easy task, but we thought the Guess Lace Illusion Sheath Dress from Lord and Taylor was a good alternative to Alba’s pricey dress. Done in a similar midi style, this dress offers both a sweet lace and see-through sleeves and hemline reminiscent of Alba’s dress. Available for $168, this dress will easily pass Alba’s Jonathan Saunders look for a fraction of the cost.

Capping off our look for less is a pretty pink pump, and there is no better style than the Jessica Simpson Sandous Platform Pump to do the job. Featuring a pretty fuchsia suede outer, these pumps will inject a much-needed shot of color to your look-alike ensemble — and the best part is their on sale for only $44.94 from DSW.

If you love Jessica Alba’s beautiful look but aren’t willing to wait for the Jonathan Saunders Spring 2016 collection or pay a high price for the ensemble, we’ve recreated Alba’s look from head to toe for only $212.94. Complete your look with a touch of Alba’s new Honest makeup, and you’ll be ‘honestly’ stunning!

Take Her Look [For Less]

August went out with a bang — or should we say a ‘grand slam’ —with the last day of the month playing host to the 15th Annual USTA Foundation Opening Night Gala in New York City. And while the gala was for a good cause with proceeds benefitting the USTA Foundation, which serves to bring “tennis, education, and health curricula” to children and adults, the event was also filled with some great fashion.

Our favorite look came courtesy of Amanda Seyfried, who attended the event in what InStyle reports was a black and white scallop-hem dress by Red Valentino. She completed her gala-ready look with a floral pouch and black pointed-toe heels.

While Seyfried’s look is the object of our envy, it comes at a price that is not-so enviable. Her floral pouch alone, which The Daily Mail reports is by Givenchy, costs a lofty $450. But if you love her entire outfit, we’ve found all the pieces necessary to recreate her look for less. Read on for the results!

Finding a dress to mimic her Red Valentino number was quite the task, but we thought that the GUESS Colorblocked Fringe-Lace Bodycon Dress from Macy’s came pretty close. This dress not only invoked the scallop detail at the hemline of her dress, it also features a black and white colorblocking reminiscent of the Red Valentino frock. But this look is sure to cost much less, coming it at $94.40.

Next on our shopping list was a floral clutch to rival Seyfried’s Givenchy style, and we though the Steve Madeen Noelle Floral Clutch from DSW did just that. Done in an equally dainty floral, this clutch is given a bit of an edge with tonal studs embossed into the flap. And for only $34.95, you’ll have a style similar to the Givenchy clutch at a fraction of the cost.

Our look for less wouldn’t be complete without a classic pointed-toe pump, and the Nine West Rocha Platform Pump from DSW does the trick. These heels can be paired with outfits far beyond our look-alike ensemble, making their $59.95 price money well spent.

Amanda Seyfried’s U.S. Open Gala look cost at least $450, and that was only for her Givenchy floral pouch. But our recreated look will have you gala-ready for only $189.30. Now that you have the perfect outfit, all you need is a gala to wear it to!

Take Her Look [For Less] – ‘The Mindy Project’ Edition

Everyone’s favorite OB-GYN, Dr. Mindy Lahiri, will be returning to the small screen on September 15 when The Mindy Project makes its Hulu debut. Although fans have to wait a few more weeks for the show’s return, fans of Mindy Kaling’s on-screen fashion can start dressing like her stylish character almost immediately with our new Look for Less series featuring The Mindy Project.

On August 23, Kaling posted a photo on Instagram of a red-themed outfit from an upcoming episode of the show. Standing just outside of Dr. Lahiri’s office at the fictional Shulman and Associates, Kaling posed to show off her candy apple red Guess trench coat, which she paired with a denim skirt by Alexa Chung for AG and a sweater and boots both by rag & bone.

Kaling’s office look for her character is certainly eye-catching, but what’s more eye-catching is its total price! Her trench, the Curved-Hem Trench Coat by Guess, was last available for $180, while her Alexa Chung for AG A-Line Denim Skirt is available at Nordstrom for $178. Add in her $325 rag & bone ‘Isabella’ sweater and her $525 red rag & bone Margot booties, and her outfit totals $1,208. But if you love this all-red ensemble, we’ve found all the pieces necessary to recreate the entire look for less. Read on for the results!

A classic red trench coat was the first item on our shopping list, and we quickly found a beautiful alternative to Kaling’s Guess trench in the DKNY Double-Breasted Skirted Trench Coat from 6pm. Done in an equally cheery red, this trench could easily pass for Kaling’s Guess trench, but it’s available at a fraction of the cost for only $57.99.

Finding a sweater to rival the intricate print of the rag & bone sweater was no easy task, but the MICHAEL by Michael Kors Bead Hem Long Sleeve Crew Sweater proved itself to be a strong competitor. Although this sweater is done in a crew neck, the band of beading along the hemline invokes the small dot pattern at the bottom of Kaling’s sweater. Done in a rich navy, this sweater will perfectly complement your new red trench, and what’s more is that it’s available from 6pm for only $54.99.

Button-front denim skirts have seen a bit of a revival these days, so finding a style to mimic the Alexa Chung for AG number was fairly simple. The Button-Front A-Line Skirt by MOTO not only offers a similar A-line shape to Kaling’s skirt, it also boasts a similar construction with the two parallel seams running vertically down the front of the skirt. This look-alike skirt acts as a perfect substitute for the Alexa Chung for AG skirt, coming in at only $52 from Topshop.

A red ankle boot completes our look for less, and although nothing can really compete with Kaling’s red rag & bone booties, we thought the Diba Oh Sage Red Suede booties from 6pm came pretty close. Done in a bright red, these booties not only mimic the color of the rag & bone booties, they also feature a similar stacked heel construction and side zipper detail. The best part is that these boots won’t set you back $525 like the rag & bone style, coming it at only $50.99.

Kaling’s all-red office-ready look for Dr. Lahiri is certainly eye-catching, and so is its $1,208 price tag. But if you love her look and want to recreate it for yourself, our look-alike outfit only totals $215.88, allowing you to look like the trendy Manhattan doctor without spending like her!
