She Leads, You Follow: Baby2Baby Gala Edition

The most stylish moms of Los Angeles took to the red carpet on Nov. 14 for the annual Baby2Baby Gala in Los Angeles, California. Benefitting the non-profit Baby2Baby, which was started by Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein, the gala seeks to bring awareness to the organization’s mission of helping to “supply families in need with essentials for children up to ages 12.” And this year’s gala was not only charitable, but also incredibly fashionable.

Catching our eye in a pale pink number was Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who walked the red carpet in a short blush dress with a beaded bodice. She paired her pocket-accented frock with grey suede pointed-toe pumps.

Adding a much-need pop of color to the gala’s red carpet was Jenna Dewan-Tatum, who rocked a bright emerald green gown with a thigh-high slit and rhinestone embellishments. She completed her stylish ensemble with a pair of white pointed-toe pumps, and perhaps her best accessory yet — her handsome husband Channing Tatum.

Wrapping up our favorite gala looks was Scandal star Kerry Washington, who floated down the red carpet in a black semi-sheer tulle ballgown. Breaking up the sea of tulle were light pink floral appliqués that cascaded down the bodice of the dress and into the skirt.

Although these stylish moms are dressed up for a gala affair, there are certain things from their looks that we can apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Discrete pockets – Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s pale pink frock is proof that pockets have a place in formalwear: the skirt of her dress has side pockets sewn into the pleating of the skirt, making them well-camouflaged and discrete. Although pockets can sometimes be bulky, pockets like these actually fall right into the garment’s natural construction, making them unobtrusive and barely perceptible. Pockets in dresses and skirts are becoming increasingly popular, so if you want to try them out, look for pieces that incorporate the pockets in a way that won’t add volume to your lower half; that is, find pockets that are creatively concealed via pleats (like Huntington-Whiteley’s dress) or sewn into the side seams of the garment.
  2. Colors are complementary — Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s bright green gown perfectly complements her rich skin tone; that’s because the dress is done in what’s called a jewel tone, or colors of gemstones that are universally flattering to all skin tones. Buying garments of any kind in colors like emerald, amethyst, ruby or citrine will automatically enhance the natural richness in your skin tone and give you a glowing appearance.
  3. Appliqués are enhancing — Kerry Washington’s appliqué-embellished gown shows us the power of details in an outfit. Not only do these appliqués add visual interest to her look while breaking up her all-black ensemble, these floral details also accentuate her waist and hips since they are mostly concentrated in the center of the gown. Using embellishments like appliqués to your advantage will not only make your outfits more interesting, they will also enhance your shape when done in a way similar to Washington’s dress. Concentrating embellishments near your neckline can direct attention to your face, while appliqués at the shoulder and hip can create the illusion of a balanced, hourglass silhouette.

She Leads, You Follow: The A-List Anniversary Party Edition

A-list celebrities showed up in their most fashionable outfits to The A-List’s 15th Anniversary Party on September 1. The clothing company’s party, held at their Beverly Hills showroom, played host to the likes of Jordana Brewster, Freida Pinto and Minka Kelly. And while all the guests in attendance dressed to impress, we couldn’t help but fall in love with a certain few looks from the party.

First to steal our hearts was Rosario Dawson, who rocked what PopSugar reported was a green printed jumpsuit by Ella Moss, which she paired with a leopard print clutch and gladiator heels, both by Vince Camuto.

Vanessa Hudgens followed suit in an equally chic ensemble, wearing a white tie-neck blouse with red wide-leg trousers. Hudgens completed her look with a brown and black Céline bag and bright turquoise earrings — accessories much more stylish than the cast she was sporting on her right hand.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum was another lady in red, donning a red split-shoulder dress with mesh detailing down the center. Silver studded t-strap heels took her look to the next level, while her silver metallic clutch with printed red lips invoked her own glossy red lips.

Dawson, Hudgens and Dewan-Tatum may be dressed up for an a-list affair, but there are certain things from their looks that we can learn from and apply in our everyday style.

  1. Prints can be mixed – Rosario Dawson’s printed jumpsuit and clutch showed us how to effortlessly pair two different prints in two different colors palettes. First, both prints are done in neutrals or pseudo-neutrals (colors other than traditional black, brown, navy and grey that can easily pair with other colors); this immediately rules out the problem of the prints clashing based on their mismatched colors since neutrals go with everything. Next, both prints share a common color (black), which allows them to work together to create some sense of cohesion, even though they are two different patterns. Finally, Dawson’s jumpsuit features a larger, bolder leaf-like print, while her clutch has a smaller swatch of leopard print. Having one print be the main focus while the other plays a supporting role reduces the chance of the prints conflicting or competing for attention. If you want to try to mix prints, keep these tips in mind, and with a little bit of practice, you’ll be mixing prints like a pro — or like Rosario Dawson!
  2. Pops of color don’t have to be large – Although she wore red wide-leg trousers, Vanessa Hudgens’ outfit contained a much smaller pop of color that still had a significant impact. Her turquoise earrings may feature only a few small droplets of color, but they add a whole new dimension to the outfit, giving it more visual interest while also drawing the eye up toward her face. Wearing small pops of color in jewelry is a great way to add a bit of life to your outfit in a way that won’t clash with the colors already working through your look, so take Hudgens’ lead and try a colorful earring to not only breathe some life into your ensemble, but also to frame your pretty face.
  3. Matching isn’t always a faux pas – It may seem like a fashion faux-pas to be too “matchy-matchy” in your outfit, but Jenna Dewan-Tatum showed us that matching your lipstick to your dress isn’t such a bad thing after all. In fact, it creates a cohesive, pulled together look. However, notice that she breaks up the red in her outfit with hints of silver (a pseudo-neutral) in her shoes and in her clutch; if she were to wear a red shoe and carry a red clutch, her outfit becomes less cohesive and more monotone and boring. If you decide to match your lipstick to your dress (or even match jewelry to a color in your outfit), limit the matching to one item so as not to create a monotonous look. Be sure to also break up your matching colors with other, non-conflicting hues (like metallics or other pseudo-neutrals) to add some complexity to your look.

Take Her Look [For Less]

It’s not ironic that Jenna Dewan-Tatum showed up to the Ace Museum in Los Angeles on July 22 in ace style. According to Cosmopolitan, the actress attended Buick’s 24 Hours of Happiness test drive launch event, looking as beautiful as ever in a sexy orange dress with a plunging neckline and cutaway back. She paired the look with a white heeled sandal and a matching orange lipstick.

The Daily Mail reports that Dewan-Tatum’s sassy orange frock is the Margote dress by Solace London, and while her exact dress is sold out, it is available in pink and black. This dress looks like it might be accompanied by a hefty price tag, but it’s actually quite affordable — it originally sold for $126.70, but it is now on sale for only $63.80! Although this dress already affordable, we set out to recreate the look for even less, finding a dress and heels for less than the original $126.70 price tag of Dewan-Tatum’s dress.

To mimic the side cutouts on Dewan-Tatum’s Solace London frock, we chose the Make Your Mock Coral Red Dress from Lulu’s. Although this dress is cut in a more straight silhouette with a high mock neck, we thought this dress was still sexy enough to be a contender to recreate Dewan-Tatum’s look. This subtly sexy dress will only set you back $49, making it an easily accessible way to mimic the look of the Solace London dress.

If you are looking for something a little sexier, the Flash of Flame Coral Red Bodycon Dress from Lulu’s will not only give you the same deep v-neckline as Dewan-Tatum’s look, it will also give you a similar bodycon silhouette complete with back cutouts. Done in a strikingly similar orange to the Solace London dress, this frock will ensure that you are the center of attention. And for only $59, it’s still a couple bucks cheaper than the sale price of Dewan-Tatum’s dress!

To complete the look, you’ll need a pair of strappy sandals. Lulu’s delivers yet again with the Three Love White Dress Sandals. While these sandals are slightly simpler than Dewan-Tatum’s heels, they still offer a similar tri-strap style in a way that’s not too heavy or overwhelming. For only $32, these sandals will not only be a great way to complete this outfit, but they will also be a great addition to any wardrobe in need of a dressy sandal.

If you are looking for a sandal that imitates the criss-crossing pattern at the top of Dewan-Tatum’s heels, try the Michael Antonio Thorstein Sandal from DSW. Although these sandals are a bit strappier than Dewan-Tatum’s, they are just as chic, and for only $39.95, they are a super affordable way to complete the look for less.

She Leads, You Follow: Jenna Dewan-Tatum

On June 30, the stars of Magic Mike XXL hit the red carpet to celebrate the movie’s European premiere, and although the cast dazzled on the carpet, one of the stars’ spouses is topping all of the best dressed lists from the event.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum, wife of Channing Tatum (a.k.a Magic Mike himself), strut her stuff on the red carpet in this demure black and white Zuhair Murad jumpsuit, featuring a gradual beading detail spanning from her shoulders to her waist, which she paired with a simple black clutch and a bright red lip.

Although this look was worn on the red carpet, there are things to take away from Dewan-Tatum’s jumpsuit style that can be applied to everyday dressing, whether you are getting dressed for a night on the town or a day running errands.

  1. As easy as one piece – Jumpsuits are such easy pieces to wear; just put one on and you are instantly dressed! As Dewan-Tatum shows, jumpsuits can work for special events, but they also work for more casual, day-to-day dressing. To wear a jumpsuit for dressier occasions, take Dewan-Tatum’s lead and opt for a jumpsuit in classic colors (like black and white!), and make sure that fits perfectly to your frame: this means defining your natural waist, while emphasizing or minimizing certain areas to create an hourglass shape (in Dewan-Tatum’s case, she emphasized her shoulders with beading and balanced out that strong shoulder with a wide leg on the pants). For daytime, try the jumpsuit’s more casual relative: the romper. Look for rompers in fun prints and colors, and pair them with your favorite pair of cute gladiator sandals to create a casual, yet put together look.
  2. It’s all in the details – Dewan-Tatum’s jumpsuit is the perfect example of how fine details can elevate your look. The beading on her jumpsuit adds visual interest while also giving her a stronger shoulder, since the beading is more dense in that area than in other areas. The black band at her waist highlights her natural waistline, and although this is the most simple part of the jumpsuit, it is perhaps the most important because it creates shape in something that can otherwise be somewhat amorphous. Details such as these are can really make your outfit and are just as important in a jumpsuit as they are in a regular suit, a dress and even a shirt.
