Nyong’o, Ronan bare it all as stars of Calvin Klein campaign

A new fragrance means a new set of models, and the Calvin Klein brand chose two of the most recognizable actors to front its new campaign.

According to ELLE, to help spread the news about the brand’s first fragrance — aptly called “Woman” — under creative director Raf Simons, Calvin Klein selected Lupita Nyong’o and Saoirse Ronan to front its adjoining campaign, which is directed by artist Anne Collier.  Featuring “both striking, minimalist portraits of the award-winning actresses alongside women they have personally been inspired by,” ELLE says “Nyong’o chose Eartha Kitt and Katharine Hepburn, while Ronan picked Sissy Spacek and Nina Simone.”

With a fragrance that Simons says is inspired by “freedom of expression” and “the transmission of strength and inspiration from woman to the next,” ELLE reports that the creative director said its campaign is centered around the theme of embracing and owning one’s femininity.

“The campaign is an exploration of femininity—a group of women bonded by a common thread,” said Simons, “the desire to have the power to create their own identity, and to support and lead the way for those that come after them.”

Nyong’o pays for 600 kids to see ‘Black Panther’

The #BlackPantherChallenge all began as a fundraising initiative to bring children from Harlem to movie theaters to see the box office smash Black Panther. But one of the film’s stars just took that challenge to a whole new level.

According to Glamour, actor Lupita Nyong’o took to Instagram to announce that, along with her mom, joined the challenge and paid for 600 kids from her hometown of Kisumu, Kenya to watch the film. Urging others to join the movement, Glamour says Nyong’o explained why it’s so important that kids see the film.

“I wanted kids from my hometown to see the positive images reflected in the film and superheroes that they can relate to on the big screen,” she wrote.

In one of the videos accompanying her post, Glamour reports that a girl who was able to watch the film because of Nyong’o’s kindness said that the film taught her about “being a good leader by never giving up in the face of challenges and ‘people coming together to work as a team, to achieve, and to build our nation.'”

Nyong’o responds to edited magazine cover

Lupita Nyong’o didn’t hold back her disappointment after her newly-released magazine cover revealed a heavily-edited photo of the actress.

According to Glamour, the actor took to Twitter to express her frustration at Grazia UK magazine, which edited her hair on its Novemeber 2017 cover and “completely erased the portion of her natural curls that was pulled back to give the impression of a close-cropped hairstyle.” To highlight the drastic editing, Glamour says that Nyong’o shared the original and edited images in her tweet, showing how the magazine gave her a buzzcut instead of showing her natural hair that was pulled into a low ponytail.

But her effort to shed light on the issue didn’t end there; Glamour reports that she also wrote an extensive Instagram post, writing that the images of beauty that filled her childhood were ones of “light skin” and “silky hair.” However, she wrote being on a magazine’s cover allows her to break those institutionalized standards of beauty for future generations, thus even more of a reason why the editing is disappointing:

“Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that @graziauk invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like.”

While the magazine has since apologized for the photo’s editing, Glamour points out that the issue highlights the “need more women of color involved in creating the images we see in media.”

Pirelli debuts 2018 calendar models

Images from the latest Pirelli calendar are finally here, and they are absolutely magical — literally.

According to ELLE, the 2018 calendar features 17 black models and entertainers set in an Alice in Wonderland-themed photoshoot. Photographed by British fashion photographer Tim Walker and styled by British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, ELLE reports that the forthcoming calendar will feature the likes of Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong’o and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as RuPaul, Adwoa Aboah, Sasha Lane and Sean “Diddy” Combs, among others.

What is especially noteworthy about this Pirelli calendar is that this group of models marks only the second all-black cast in 30 years, according to ELLE.

Nyong’o and Fanning star in Tiffany & Co. campaign

Tiffany & Co.’s new fall campaign is set to star some familiar faces.

According to Fashionista, actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Elle Fanning will be front and center in the brand’s fall campaign, starring alongside models Natalie Westling and Christy Turlington. This marks the first instance of celebrities starring in a Tiffany & Co. campaign, says Fashionista, a change that comes courtesy of former Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, who took over the jeweler’s campaigns in April.

In addition to the arrival of celebrity faces to the campaign, Coddington also made some changes to the overall aesthetic of the ads, says Fashionista.

She not only had “the women pose in a studio instead of on the streets of New York,” according to Fashionista, she also opted against “shooting still-life imagery of the jewelry,” choosing instead to “focus on close-ups as they’re worn.”

Fashionista says that the brand revamp comes on the heels of slumping sales and stock prices and is a part of a string of other changes, which include “a relaunch of its affordable ‘Love’ collection with the slogan ‘#lovenotlike,'” as well as a collection from designer Reed Krakoff.

As for Coddington’s decision to employ celebrities, she told Business of Fashion that although she’s “known not to like celebrity very much,” she wanted to “find people who are beyond the average celebrity … They have to have more to them.”

Take Her Look: Year in Review

In a year filled with great fashion, it is easy to forget even the most glamorous looks to grace the red carpets of events near and far. But as 2015 draws to a close, we can’t help but recall the most fashionable, eye-catching looks of the year that made us stop in our tracks.

Kicking off awards season in a sparkly Zuhair Murad number was Giuliana Rancic, who stunned on the Emmys red carpet in the embellishment-encrusted gown. Rancic’s gown was complemented by soft, subtle waves and dainty jewelry.

In an equally breathtaking look on country’s night to rock, Jennifer Nettles took to the red carpet of the CMAs in a pale pink gown with a mesh-covered bodice and beading at the chest. She completed her striking look with upswept hair and dramatic eye makeup.

To celebrate Glamour’s 25th Women of the Year Awards, singer Jennifer Hudson rocked the red carpet in a slate-grey gown with floral appliqués and a plunging neckline. The singer polished off her look with some sparkly bangles and earrings.

Taking the British Fashion Awards by storm in a stunning black and white number was model Jourdan Dunn, who took to the red carpet in the colorblocked number that was complete with waist cutouts and a thigh-high slit. She completed her mock-neck gown with silver single-strap sandals and minimal jewelry.

Wearing an out-of-this-world style for the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was Lupita Nyong’o, who wore an Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture crystal-encrusted gown complete with satin-trimmed cutouts. The actress topped off her look with a bright red lipstick and Chopard jewelry.

While all of these ladies were styled to perfection in 2015, there is one thing to remember from their looks to apply to the way we dress not just in 2016, but in all years to come:

The key to any good outfit is confidence; when you feel good about yourself and what you’re wearing, it immediately elevates everything from the simplest T-shirt and jeans to the most elaborate couture gown.

So in 2016, remember that you are beautiful, and dress like you know you’re beautiful.

She Leads, You Follow: ‘Star Wars’ Premiere Edition

The fashion force was certainly with those in attendance of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere in Hollywood, California. The Dec. 14 event that took over three theaters on Hollywood Boulevard — The Dolby Theatre, the TCL Chinese Theatre and El Capitan Theatre — brought out the stars of the film and other Hollywood A-listers who were all decked out to celebrate the long-awaited film’s debut.

Wowing us with an out-of-this-world style was none other than Lupita Nyong’o, who took to the premiere’s red carpet in what InStyle says is a Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture gown. Her green and silver crystal-drenched gown was offset by cutouts marked by black satin bands. Adding bling on top of bling, Nyong’o completed her stunning ensemble with Chopard jewelry.

Following suit in a sparkly number of her own was Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland, who worked the red carpet in a glitzy black mini-dress. She completed her look with fringe-embellished black sandals and some diamond jewelry.

Although Nyong’o and Hyland are dressed for the galactic event of the year, there are some things we can learn from their looks to apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Go bold or go home – Nyong’o’s gown has many bold features, from its all-over crystal embellishment to its satin-trimmed cutouts. Fashion risks like these worked completely in her favor; the crystal embellishment added visual interest while the cutouts framed in satin accentuated her natural waist. All of these bold features were well planned and well placed, allowing the risks to pay off. She even paired her look with a bright red lip and sizeable diamond earrings — more bold choices. While sometimes it is best to incorporate only one bold element into your outfit at a time, there are moments when you can break all of the rules — just be sure that when you do break the rules, you are intentional about the way you do so. For example, Nyong’o added a large drop diamond earring not only to frame her face and her bold lip color, but to play off of  the crystals from her gown. Having a method to your madness always helps tie together your bold choices in a cohesive way.
  2. Don’t fear fringe – If you are intimidated by fringe, look no further than Hyland’s sandals as an example of how you can incorporate the trend into your wardrobe without overdoing it. Her sandals are a great way to try out fringe in small doses because each shoe only has one small tassel on the front to give just a taste of the trend. If you’d rather start even smaller, another great way to incorporate fringe into your outfits is through fringe jewelry; these pieces can range from necklaces to bracelets, and they’re great ways to add hints of the trend into your everyday looks.

Take Her Look [For Less]

With the holiday season officially upon us, it is now acceptable to start wearing seasonal colors. And actress Lupita Nyong’o did just that on a recent outing in New York City.

Spotted out and about on a chilly day in the city, Nyong’o sported a bright green cable-knit sweater by Ralph Lauren, says The Daily Mail, which she paired with a black skater skirt, black tights, black pumps and a black wool fedora. Nyong’o polished off her chic look with aviator frames and an eye-catching blue satchel to rival her bright green top.

Although Nyong’o’s sweater has us green with envy, we can’t say the same about its price. This cashmere cable-knit style, courtesy of Ralph Lauren’s Black Label collection, rings up at a lofty $750. While we think cashmere is always a good idea, we also think we can recreate this entire look for under $200. Read on for the results!

Finding a sweater in a hue just as bright as this Ralph Lauren number was no easy task, but the Liz Claiborne 3/4-Sleeve Geo Stitch Tunic Sweater from JCPenney was a good substitute. Done in an equally eye-catching lime green, this sweater’s stitching mimics the classic cable-knit style but does so with a more modern, geometric pattern. The best part — its original price is only $54.

She Leads, You Follow: Glamour Women of the Year Awards Edition

Magazine awards season is in full swing as Glamour hosted their 25th Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Nov. 9. The event, hosted by the incomparable Amy Schumer, paid tribute to all of the most inspirational women of 2015, with honorees including principle dancer of the American Ballet Theatre Misty Copeland and entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes. And besides the moving acceptance speeches and tear-inducing moments, the event lived up to its name, bringing an onslaught of glamorous red carpet looks.

First to capture our attention was actress Lupita Nyong’o, who wowed on the red carpet prior to the awards in what InStyle says is a Jason Wu peplum gown done in a forest green. She completed her jewel-tone look with gemstone drop earrings.

Working the red carpet in a red gown, honoree Victoria Beckham opted to wear a dress of her own design to received her Woman of the Year award, says InStyleShe completed her look with minimal jewelry and a no-fuss hairstyle.

Orange is the New Black‘s Uzo Aduba attended the awards dinner in a white column gown with a keyhole neckline. She added a subtle note of color to her look with a turquoise ring on her index finger.

Also attending the awards’ dinner was Jennifer Hudson, who stunned in a slate grey appliqué-embellished gown with a plunging v-neckline. Chandelier earrings complemented her slicked back hairstyle while she added a couple of sparkly bracelets to polish off her look.

Although this is normally where we discuss what lessons to take away from each of these looks, this She Leads, You Follow is special. There is only one thing that we can learn, and it’s not from their red carpet ensembles — every single one of these ladies exudes confidence, not because of their outfits, but because of who they are and all they have accomplished. These women show us that confidence in ourselves is worth more than any gown, any piece of jewelry or any pair of shoes in the world. Confidence is priceless, and they are living proof that believing in yourself can take you very, very far.

She Leads, You Follow: Paris Couture Week

From Sunday, July 5 to Thursday, July 9, the City of Lights is being transformed into the City of Fashion as it hosts Couture Week. The Associated Press reports that Monday’s fall-winter 2015-2016 shows featured Giambattista Valli, Ralph & Russo, Dior and Schiaparelli, but it wasn’t the models on the runway that stole the show.

Instead, it was the guests of the Dior show that caught everyone’s attention. The couture show was graced with the attendance of not only Emily Blunt and Olivia Palermo, who are both often praised for their impeccable fashion, but also recent fashion it-girl Lupita Nyong’o. According to InStyle, Nyong’o stepped away from her trip to Kenya where she kicked off her save-the-elephants campaign to attended the show.

And Nyong’o certainly showed up in style. She looked stunning in the hot Paris weather, wearing a red-hot Dior double-face wool dress paired with black Dior pumps, a black clutch, simple earrings and round mirrored sunglasses.

Emily Blunt hit the Dior Haute Couture show in a glamorous all-white ensemble, wearing a Dior peplum dress paired with Dior Fine Jewelry, a black clutch and houndstooth-printed pointy-toe pumps.

Olivia Palermo added some print to the couture party, showing up in a floral Dior sleeveless coat which she brought in at the waist with a metallic belt. She paired the look with modern cat-eye sunglasses, grey pointy-toe pumps and a silver metallic clutch.

Although these beautiful ladies are decked out in Dior for Couture Week, there are a few things we can take away from their looks to amp up our style so we can head into our weeks with a couture flair.

  1. Small details make a big difference – Nyong’o’s gorgeous red dress is fairly simple, with seaming running down the front of the dress and very little seaming around the waist area. However, the dress has a small button and tab detail that cinches in the waist at the perfect spot, defining her waist with an interesting detail instead of with seams. Look for small details like this in your clothing that do double duty: they should not only add visual interest, but also serve a purpose, such as defining your all-important waistline. Details like this will create a more polished, sophisticated and tailored look that will appear as though you spent weeks obsessing over every little detail of your outfit!
  2. Peplums are a blessing – Emily Blunt’s peplum dress shows us just how useful a peplum can be. Peplums are a great way  to not only create the illusion of a narrow waist, but also to camouflage anything you might be concerned about in your stomach area; since the material floats away from your natural waist, it can easily hide anything you are worried about. If you wish to add a little emphasis to your hips, peplums are a great way to do that; the basic shape of Blunt’s dress without the peplum is rather straight, so the peplum creates curves on what would otherwise be a very pencil-like shape. To mimic this look, try a peplum top paired with a pencil skirt; a combination like this will define your waist while hiding any stomach-area problems and emphasizing your curvy hips.
  3. Accessories can make a huge impact – Olivia Palermo added a simple belt to her sleeveless jacket look, and it made all the difference. Adding a belt at the natural waist can take your look from shapeless to cinched instantaneously. If Palermo hadn’t added the belt, the jacket would have looked like a solid rectangle on her body. The belt helps to cinch in her waist, creating shape that the jacket alone could not create. Adding a belt to jackets, dresses and even tops can help enhance the built-in shape of a garment or create shape in an otherwise shapeless piece while also adding a little bit of visual interest to the outfit.
