Kors to nix fur in 2018

Fashion is about to get a little more animal-friendly in 2018, thanks to Michael Kors.

According to Glamour, the American luxury brand announced plans to “to be fur-free by the end of December 2018,” putting forth a commitment to replace animal fur with alternatives created by “technological advances in fabrications” that will create “a luxe aesthetic using non-animal fur.” Glamour says the change will take effect in both the Michael Kors brand and its recently-acquired Jimmy Choo.

The decision follows a June protest in which Kors’ on-stage interview with journalist Alina Cho was interrupted by 20 animal rights activists, says Glamour, while his SoHo store was picketed by PETA protesters back in February.

While the move is certainly a step in the right direction, the Kors brand isn’t the first to decide to go fur-less, Glamour reports, with brands like Gucci, Calvin Klein and Armani also pledging similar action in recent years.

She Leads, You Follow: SAG Awards Edition

The best and brightest stars of Hollywood came out in droves to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday, Jan. 30 for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The awards, presented by the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, is a celebration of the year’s best performances in film and primetime television. But prior to the awards ceremony, the honorees took to the red carpet to show off their best style.

Catching our eye first was a hot pink number by Sofía Vergara, who became the object of everyone’s gaze as she took her turn down the red carpet in a stunning Vera Wang gown, says E!Online. She topped off her look with a gold statement necklace and a fuchsia clutch to rival her bright dress.

Following suit in another pink ensemble was Saoirse Ronan, who opted for a subtler blush look by Michael Kors, says E!OnlineThe Brooklyn star let the simple elegance of her lace gown be the star of her look, as she swept her hair up in a tousled top-knot and accessorized with sparkly diamond earrings.

Kristen Wiig decided to take a different approach, opting for a chic Rouland Mouret jumpsuit instead of a gown. Wiig paired her black, white and embellished one piece with a silver barrel clutch and heels to match while styling her hair in a refreshing updo.

Bessie star and SAG Award winner Queen Latifah showed us just how beautiful a simple black gown can be when she hit the red carpet in a sparkly Michael Costello number. Done in a kaleidoscope pattern, the gown’s beading caught the light of every photographer’s flash, illuminating the already-glowing Queen Latifah.

Draped in merlot was Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, who opted for a flowy Prabal Gurung number for the night’s festivities. She completed her goddess look with wavy tresses, strappy heels and a sparkly clutch.

Rounding off our favorite looks of the night was Amy Poehler, who wowed in a black embroidered Stella McCartney gown, according to E!OnlineThe actress completed her simply, yet elegant ensemble with straight locks and simple diamond jewelry.

While these stars are all dressed up for an event in the height of awards season, there are certain things we can take away from their looks and apply to the way we dress every day. Each star obviously wore an outfit that accentuated her shape, done by seaming, beading or embellishment. Although color, in its various hues and shades, was a big theme throughout the night, traditional black was elevated through beading and embroidery, as well as through a modern black and white color combination.

The details of every single red carpet look are important, but what is perhaps most important is the way each actress carries herself — with confidence. Because each woman is confident in who she is, her outfit merely complements her personality and enhances her sense of confidence.

Beauty doesn’t come from a stellar outfit, flawless makeup and flashy accessories; it comes from the confidence within. And each woman on the SAG Awards red carpet showed us that very thing.

She Leads, You Follow: God’s Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards Gala Edition

On Oct. 15, God’s Love We Deliver hosted their ninth annual Golden Heart Awards which honors those who have worked tirelessly to further the mission of the non-profit organization. Held at Spring Studios in Manhattan, the awards featured two honorees and a number of celebrities who attended the event in high fashion.

One of our favorite looks came courtesy of Kate Hudson, who wowed on the event’s red carpet in a black and white floral Michael Kors Collection dress, featuring a high neckline and split bodice. She completed her look with mustard yellow pointed-toe pumps, says InStyle

Diane Kruger went for something blue, wearing a Michael Kors Collection tonal abstract-print dress with belting detail at the bodice. Kruger polished off her look with a black frame clutch and minimal jewelry.

Rounding out our favorite looks is Emily Blunt, who took to the Golden Heart Awards in another Michael Kors Collection dress, this time a number featuring what InStyle reports is an illusion bodice and sequin skirt. Finishing off her look were single-strap sandals and a patterned box clutch.

Although these lovely ladies are dressed for a night of celebrating the generosity of God’s Love We Deliver’s supporters, there are several aspects of their looks that we can apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. A split decision – Kate Hudson’s black and white dress shows that it’s possible to have the best of both worlds. While her dress features a high neckline, it also has split bodice. Dichotomies like this can be very useful when putting together an outfit; here, we read “conservative” from the dress’s high neck, but then read “sexy” from the slit. Things like this can create a visually interesting, sophisticated look, so when you’re putting together an outfit, look for the ways in which the clothing sends different messages. For example, high-waisted, wide-legged trousers can read as classic and even a bit professional. To contrast this, try pairing it with a modern crop top for a chic going-out look.
  2. Belted together – Diane Kruger’s belted dress shows us the importance of belts not just when paired with dresses, but with any garment. Here, her belt not only accentuates her waist, it also adds bit of an edge to the outfit, since it is done in leather and creates a wrap-effect around her ribcage. Belts are a great way to create shape in anything from a dress to a top, as they easily define your waistline and accentuate your curves. However, they are also a great way to build interest in your outfit, since they can indicate an edgier look (like Kruger’s) or even a more modern look, depending on the style of the belt.
  3. Mix it up – Wearing what can be called a mixed-media dress, Emily Blunt shows us how to wear a few different textures and materials simultaneously. The top of her dress reads as an open mesh, while the bottom of her dress is a skirt full of sparkles. This mixing of textures creates a really rich, intriguing look. To mimic this effect in your own outfits, an easy way to start is by mixing leather with things like lace, wool or even chunky knits. Mixing textures like this will not only look visually interesting, it will also look rather cohesive and put together.

She Leads, You Follow: 2015 Emmys Edition

The stars of the small screen took to the red carpet outside of the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on Sept. 20 to recognize the year’s stellar television performances at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. And while the award show itself brought some surprising wins, it should come as no surprise that the the red carpet prior to the main event showcased some stunning fashion. Although it was hard to pick our favorite looks, there were several leading ladies who led the pack with their red carpet style.

Sparkling in a silver St. John gown was none other than Sofía Vergara. The Modern Family star walked the red carpet in a body-hugging beaded gown with a strapless neckline and modified mermaid silhouette.

Viola Davis was the picture of elegance as she walked the red carpet with Julius Tennon on Sunday night. According to E! OnlineDavis wore a Carmen Marc Valvo gown, featuring dense black floral beading at the waist that dispersed as it neared the gown’s fuller A-line skirt. The highlight of Davis’ night was yet to come, however, as she went on to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her role in How to Get Away With Murder.

Keeping it simple in an all-black ensemble was Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen, who donned a Georges Chakra number for her walk down the red carpet. Featuring a multi-strap neckline and a trumpet skirt, Bowen took her gown to the next level by pairing it with bold jewelry and a shiny frame clutch.

The Good Wife’s Christine Baranski added a pop of color to the Emmys with her bright pink gown. Baranski walked the red carpet in an eye-catching hot pink gown, featuring a cap sleeve, a cutout at the neck and a defined waist. She completed her look with a gold clutch and gold jewelry.

Amy Poehler continued the cutout theme with her all-black ensemble, which featured  cutouts at the ribcages to accentuate her waist. The high-neck Michael Kors gown featured a column skirt that fell from her natural waist straight down to the floor. Poehler offset her minimalistic look by adding a stack of bold bangles to each wrist and dainty gold earrings to frame her face.

It seems like good style is all in the ‘family’, as Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland rocked the red carpet in a wine-colored Zac Posen gown. The dress featured an off-the-shoulder neckline (which created a cutout on the back of her dress) and a modified trumpet skirt. Hyland completed her red carpet look with a maroon bangle, beaded earrings and handfuls of rings.

Rounding out our favorite looks of the night was E! host Giuliana Rancic, who took her turn on the red carpet in a soft pink Zuhair Murad gown with all-over beading. The off-the-shoulder gown featured a defined waistline and soft, ethereal mermaid skirt.

Although these ladies are dressed to impress on the red carpet of the Emmys, there are certain elements of their glamorous gowns that we can apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Define your waist – The one common thread among these diverse gowns that they define a waist in some way, whether it’s through cutouts, like Amy Poehler’s dress; a simple band, like Giuliana Rancic’s dress; seaming, like Sarah Hyland’s gown; or even embellishments, like Viola Davis’ gown. Defining your waist allows you to create the illusion of a smaller frame, while also making it seem as though your legs begin at your natural waistline (making them look much longer than they are). Each gown defines the waistline in a unique way, so there’s no excuse not to do so in your own outfits every day!
  2. Less is more – There were some simple gowns on the red carpet, but simple doesn’t necessarily mean ‘boring.’ Amy Poehler, Sarah Hyland, Julie Bowen and Christine Baranski all wore solid-colored gowns, but they each had intrinsic features that made then stand out, such as cutouts, an off-the-shoulder neckline, a multi-strap neckline and intricate seaming respectively. They also punched up their looks with jewelry and accessories, which instantly added visual interest to the blank canvases of their gowns. It’s so easy to discredit a piece of clothing just because it’s not flashy or loud enough, but these ladies showed us that sometimes, less is more.
  3. Confidence is key – The most essential part of any outfit is something that cannot be bought: confidence. All of these women (and those we didn’t have space to discuss!) walked the red carpet with confidence in who they are. The expensive dresses, jewelry and shoes, the hair and makeup all add up to make a stunning red carpet look; but all of this doesn’t equal the priceless value of confidence. So no matter what you’re wearing, be confident in who you are and believe in your own beauty, because that’s worth so much more than the cost of your outfit.

Take Her Look [For Less]

The streets of New York City have been a little more fashionable now that Jennifer Lawrence has been spending more time in the city. The Daily Mail reports that the actress, who has been house hunting in The Big Apple for the past month, was spotted yesterday in Tribeca wearing an all-black crop top ensemble. According to VogueLawrence’s bustier-style crop top and pencil skirt are from the Michael Kors Collection, which she styled with an Ana Khouri necklace, Roger Vivier clutch and Jimmy Choo gladiators.

It’s hard not to envy Lawrence’s entire outfit from head to toe, but what THL covets the most are those gorgeous Jimmy Choo heels. While these gladiators effortlessly tie in her gold clutch and necklace with their gold heels, their price tag is not effortlessly affordable — they originally retail for $950 at NET-A-PORTER, but they are on sale for lofty $570. However, if you lover Lawrence’s trendy gladiator style, there are a few other options out there that can mimic her style at a fraction of the cost.

If you love the combination of black and gold on Lawrence’s Jimmy Choo heels, Luichiny combines the two in a comparable gladiator heel. The Take A Bow heel does have more straps and more gold accents running across the top of the foot, but it is just as stylish and easy to wear as Lawrence’s similar style. These heels, however, are available at Heels.com for only $99.

Nordstrom Rack offers another alternative to Lawrence’s Jimmy Choos, and what makes this pair so great is that they are under $100. The Beatrice High Heel Sandal by Modern Rush has a similar strap pattern to Lawrence’s heels, while still offering a hint of gold in the side zipper. These heels were originally priced at $79.99, but Nordstrom Rack has them for only $34.97!

So if you love Jennifer Lawrence’s gladiators but can’t bear the thought of spending over $500 for a shoe that is supposedly “on sale,” give one of these similarly stylish options a try! And don’t forget to pair them with some gold accessories to bring your whole look together!

Take Her Look [For Less]

Taylor Swift is as famous for her music as she is for her style. And lately, Swift’s style du jour has largely consisted of crop tops paired with anything from high-waisted shorts, skirts and even overalls. Recently, Swift was spotted in LAX wearing yet another crop top ensemble, this time sporting a black long sleeve crop top with a maroon skater skirt, which she paired with a nude Michael Kors satchel and black high-heeled booties.

Swift’s Michael Kors bag is the Casey Large Leather Satchel, which retails for $1,195 and is currently on sale for $836.50. Although we love Swift’s satchel, THL decided set out on a quest not only to find a similar satchel for less, but to replicate Swift’s whole outfit for less than $198.90 (in case you’re wondering why we chose such an odd number, it’s 1989 for her album 1989). And not only did we decide to try to recreate this outfit for less than $198.90, we decided to create this look all in one store: Forever21. Here are the results:

For the top, we found a scoop neck long sleeve crop top from Forever 21 that is almost an exact duplicate of Swift’s long sleeve style. Although the neckline is a little more open on the Forever 21 top, the bottom hem ends right in the natural waistline like Swift’s, making it the perfect option to imitate her style. This top is available for only $7.90.

Finding a solid maroon skater skirt with similar movement to Swift’s was no easy task, but we managed to find this gauze skater skirt in a wine color from Forever 21 that is almost a dead-ringer for Swift’s skirt. The only difference between the Forever 21 skirt is that it offers a wider waistband, which actually can enhance your natural waistline and make it look smaller. This skirt is available for only $11.90.

Trying to find booties with a similar shape to Swift’s proved to be one of the the more challenging parts of this outfit treasure hunt. But, Forever 21 offered this faux suede bootie that is close enough to pass for Swift’s booties. Although Swift’s booties have more of an almond toe-shaped toe box and a shorter heel, these booties mimic the overall silhouette and shaft height of Swift’s booties, making them the perfect option to complete this outfit. These booties come in at a cool $32.80.

Now to the main event: the bag. Forever 21’s satchel collection is a bit limited in style, shape and color, so this was definitely THE most difficult part of replicating her outfit. But, Forever 21 did come through for us, delivering a faux leather satchel in a blush color that mimics the nude/bone color of Swift’s satchel.  This satchel also has a very similar rigid structure and construction to the Michael Kors bag. The Forever 21 bag, however, is nowhere near the cost of the Michael Kors satchel – this bag comes in at a reasonable $24.90.

To complete the look, we had to find similar sunglasses and charm necklace. So, we found these cool metal-accented square  sunglasses to mimic Swift’s wayfarer style. These are available at Forever 21 for only $5.90.

And for the charm necklace, we found this cute rhinestone sunburst charm necklace to add just a little bit of sparkle and shine to your outfit. This dainty little necklace will complete your Swift-inspired outfit for only $2.90.

We recreated Taylor Swift’s entire look, but did we stay within our $198.90 budget? By our calculations, our look for less came in at $86.30! So if you love Swift’s style, head over to Forever 21 because not only can you find all the pieces necessary to replicate her look, but you can also put together completed outfits for under $200.

She Leads, You Follow: Tony Awards Edition

Although the Tony Awards are currently underway, one of the most important facets of every awards show has concluded: the red carpet! And as on every red carpet, there were plenty of gorgeous gowns and adorned dresses to drool over!

THL’s first favorite red carpet beauty is none other than Tony Award co-host, Kristin Chenoweth! Chenoweth, star of On the Twentieth Century, stunned on the red carpet in a sparkling silver Zac Posen gown. What is so intriguing about her gown is the seaming running underneath the bustline and down the front of the dress – this seaming emphasizes her tiny waist and creates structure in the dress, playing up Chenoweth’s natural curves.

Equally as beautiful on the red carpet was Jennifer Grey, who wowed in a lace fit and flare Zac Posen gown adorned with wispy feathers from the knee down to the hemline. This gown is evocative of a wedding gown, which can be quite risky to wear, but this dress oddly worked as a red carpet gown. The floral pattern in the lace almost read as a crochet of sorts, making it a little more casual than a traditional wedding gown lace. The long vertical seams running down the front of the gown help to elongate Grey’s frame, and the light, wispy feathers at the bottom of the gown are a fun element that add a just a little bit of flare to the gown.

Another red carpet favorite comes from Orange is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling. Schilling turned heads in a simple, yet striking long-sleeve black Michael Kors gown, complete with a sheer midsection cutout. The sheer cutout helps to emphasize Schilling’s waist and create shape in an otherwise simple gown. The cutout extends a little bit to the top of her thigh, giving her a little bit more of a curve on her hips.

Last but certainly not least, another stunner in silver (and white): Misty Copeland. Copeland’s gown is the ultimate example of using your clothing to your advantage: her gown is replete with well-placed seams and detailing that creates curves on her frame. The silver detailing begins at the her shoulders, then narrows at her waist to draw attention to her toned midsection. The detailing then widens again at the hips, creating the illusion of fuller hips. The seams then fall off into longer lines, which elongate her lower half.

So what can you take away from these gorgeous red carpet gowns to apply to your everyday wardrobe? Here are just a few things to remember:

  1. Pay attention to seaming – The placement of seams in an article of clothing can be extremely helpful in creating a shape, emphasizing your curves, or elongating your frame. The seams do the work so your body doesn’t have to!
  2. Take a risk – Whether it’s a well-placed cutout or some interesting details (like feathers!), taking a little bit of a risk with a more subdued outfit can result in a chic look that will have all eyes on you!
  3. Fit is everything – All four ladies have their gowns perfectly tailored to their bodies, allowing for the seaming and detailing to be placed in such a way that enhances theirs figures. Whether its a pair of jeans, a pencil skirt, or a blazer, be sure that your clothes fit you properly so you can show off your best assets in style!
