‘Golden Girls’ residence opens in NYC for LGBTQ youth

A new homeless shelter for LGBTQ youth will have us all saying, “Thank you for being a friend.”

According to HuffPostThe Ali Forney Center, which is the largest agency dedicated to homeless LGBTQ youth in the country, opened the doors of its new Bea Arthur Residence with a holiday-themed fête on Nov. 30.”

Named in honor of the actress who played the snarky and smart Dorothy Zbornak on the hit TV series, “The Golden Girls,” HuffPost reports that Arthur was a major supporter of the Forney Center, hosting a one-woman show in 2005 that raised over $40,000 and even leaving $300,000 to the center when she died.

As for the new Bea Arthur Residence, HuffPost says it houses 18 beds and will provide shelter for “participants in the center’s two-year transitional living program, designed to prepare homeless LGBTQ young people for successfully living alone.”

Executive director for the Ali Forney Center Carl Siciliano called the new residence’s opening a “momentous occasion,” according to HuffPost, as it “marks an important shift in the way that we are able to house and care for young people who have been discarded by their families simply because of who they are.”

New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio even named Nov. 30 “Bea Arthur Day” to honor the star who helped make the expansion possible.

A pal, indeed!

‘Fearless Girl’ remains on Wall Street

It looks like one woman has found her place on Wall Street.

According to the Huffington Post, the “Fearless Girl” statue that was placed in the famous financial district of New York City earlier this month will remain in the area until February 2018, says Mayor Bill DeBlasio.

Originally scheduled to leave her post on April 2, HuffPost says DeBlasio decided to make the statue a semi-permanent feature of Wall Street because of her message of empowering women.

“In her short time here, the Fearless Girl has fueled powerful conversations about women in leadership and inspired so many,” he said in a statement to the New York Daily NewsHuffPost reports. “Now, she’ll be asserting herself and affirming her strength even after her temporary permit expires — a fitting path for a girl who refuses to quit.”

The statue made its debut on International Women’s Day on March 8 says HuffPost, having a staring contest with the iconic Wall Street bull as she stands with her head held high and her hands firmly on her hips.

After public advocate Letitia James pushed for the statue’s permanence and a petition on Change.org to keep the statue up circulated and received over 28,000 signatures, it looks like the statue is here to stay — at least for a little while.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Wearing an all-black ensemble in the middle of summer sounds like a fashion faux-pas. But the ever-fashionable Zendaya Coleman proved this week that the monochromatic look can be a cool style to rock under the hot summer sun.

InStyle reports that the actress was spotted out and about in New York City earlier this week wearing a black culotte-style jumpsuit with cutouts at the waist by Solace London, which she paired with simple black heels and layered gold necklaces.

Coleman’s beautiful Solace London jumpsuit, appropriately named the Divine Jumpsuit, is currently available at Shopbop for $213. And while this isn’t such a high price to pay for a high-fashion look, we know that her look can be recreated for well under her jumpsuit’s $213 price tag. Read on to see the results!

Since this jumpsuit has such a unique structure, we knew that it would be easiest to reconstruct this look with separates. So to mimic the the double sweetheart bodice of Coleman’s Solace London style, we chose the Black Sweetheart Mod Bustier Top from Love Culture. This top’s sweetheart neckline is not as severe or angular as the Solace London bodice, but at $22.95, this crop top has all the features necessary to begin to recreate Coleman’s look for less.

She Leads, You Follow: ‘Hamilton’ Opening Night Edition

Summer often brings an onslaught of new movies to the big screen, with premieres and screenings happening every other day of the week. But this week, the Great White Way’s Richard Rogers Theatre played host to a debut of its own on August 6 — the opening night of the new musical “Hamilton.”

As would be expected of a highly-anticipated Broadway musical’s opening night, the event turned out to be a star-studded affair filled with couture looks. The only problem this creates is deciding which was better: the musical or the fashion!

First to dazzle on the red carpet prior to the show was none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. According to InStyle, Parker stunned on the red carpet in an emerald green Elie Saab Haute Couture ballgown featuring a sparkly intricate embroidery and hidden side pockets. She offset her formal gown with natural hair and makeup, while adorning her wrists with green and white bangles.

Girls star Allison Williams strut her stuff down the red carpet in another head-turning look, wearing a silver beaded top and trouser set. She polished off her look with pin straight hair, a bold lip and pale pink teardrop earrings.

Although Parker and Williams are styled for the red carpet, there are some things we can learn from their formal style to apply to the way we dress everyday.

  1. Jewel tones are dazzling – Sara Jessica Parker’s emerald green ballgown shows us just how flattering jewel tones can be. In fact, jewel tones — like emerald green, amethyst purple and ruby red — are universally flattering colors, since they are rich, deep and highly saturated. To start working these colors into your wardrobe, start with accessories like a great leather handbag or even a pair of flats to try out the tones in small amounts. Once you find your favorite jewel-inspired colors, go for a top or a dress, and you’ll be surprised how much these tones will warm up your complexion.
  2. Elongate with wide-legged silhouettes – Allison Williams’ wide-legged trouser look is the perfect example of how flattering this style can be. Wide-legged trousers are the ultimate camouflage piece to add to your wardrobe, because when they start at the natural waist (as Williams’ trousers do), they create the illusion of your legs beginning at the waist, making them look much longer than they are. This style is also helpful in disguising a wider hip, since the leg of the trouser falls straight to the floor from the widest part of the hip. Pick up a pair of these trousers in the classic neutrals (black and navy) to start, and then work up to printed and embellished styles. To keep the legline long, just be sure that the material doesn’t pool around your ankles. To complete the illusion, pair these classy trousers with a sky-high heel, and you’ll have a perfect night-on-the-town look.

She Leads, You Follow: NYC ‘Southpaw’ Premiere Edition

Movie premieres always bring out incredible fashion, and the ladies at the New York City premiere of Southpaw on July 20 certainly did not disappoint. The premiere, which took place at AMC Loews Lincoln Square, seemed to have its own implicit dress code — black and white. And while that sounds like it could be dull, off-the-shoulder dresses, interesting necklines and cutouts made it anything but boring.

Rachel McAdams walked the premiere’s red carpet in what InStyle reported was a bare-shouldered tea length black dress by Self-Portrait, featuring a triangle cutout at the waist. She kept her hair and makeup dewy and fresh, while also keeping her accessories simple with Tiffany and Co. jewelry and Stuart Weitzman sandals.

Naomie Harris’ white-hot red carpet dress provided a little bit of contrast to McAdams’ all-black ensemble. Harris strut her stuff down the carpet in a beautiful one-shoulder Cushnie et Ochs dress, complete with a side slit and deep sweetheart neckline. InStyle reports that the actress polished off her look with a silver clutch by Rauwolf and black-capped pumps.

Dascha Polanco brought the party to the black-and-white-attired affair in a sexy black top with cutouts outlining the neckline and a bare back paired with high-waisted trousers, The Daily Mail reports. The Orange is the New Black star paired her sultry look with an oversized envelope clutch and strappy black heels.

Although these gorgeous ladies were decked out to rock the red carpet, there are certain things we can take away from their style and apply in the way we dress everyday:

  1. Pick a focal point – Rachel McAdams’ dress focuses mostly on her collarbone and shoulders via the off-the-shoulder neckline, while also focusing on her waist through the dress’s triangular cutout. Notice, however, that the length of the gown compensates for all of the skin shown on the top half of her body. By having a longer hemline on the dress, she is allowing for the top half of her body to be the focal point of her outfit. If the hemline of the dress were shorter and showed more leg, there would be too much skin showing, causing us to not know what exactly to zero in on. When you are planning an outfit, keep in mind what you want the focal point of that outfit to be; if you choose a top or dress with a plunging neckline, make sure that the hemline of the dress hits at least at the knee (if not a little lower) to ensure that your neckline is the sole point of attention. If you wish to make your legs the star of the show, pick a top or a dress with a higher neckline so any bare skin at your shoulders and chest won’t compete with your exposed legs.
  2. Sweethearts are universally flattering – The beautiful sweetheart neckline of Naomie Harris’ dress not only adds visual interest to her dress, it also opens up her neckline and emphasizes her bust. Sweetheart necklines, and their many iterations, are universally flattering for the sole fact that they open up your neckline. To emphasize your bustline, try a sweetheart style similar to Harris’ deeper, more architectural-style neckline; this neckline shows a little more skin, but it also has built-in structure, making it very easy to wear. If the idea of a deeper sweetheart is a little bit scary, look for deeper sweethearts that either have a one-shoulder detail like Harris’ dress or have a mesh overlay; this way, you still have the comfort of material or straps at your shoulders while also keeping the integrity of the neckline.
  3. Separates can be cohesive – We could have sworn that Dascha Polanco’s black top and pants combo was a jumpsuit, but her outfit was a great way of showing us that separates can really create a cohesive look. Keeping the separates in a dark neutrals (like black or navy) helps create a unified look while also creating a seamless transition between pieces. This could also be done in all white, allowing for a crisp, clean look that is simultaneously classic and edgy.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Although Laverne Cox is known for her role on Orange is the New Black, she proved Wednesday night that yellow is the new black bag.

Cosmopolitan reports that on July 15, Cox attended a screening of Irrational Man at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She showed up in style, of course, with The Daily Mail reporting that Cox wore a navy dress by Opening Ceremony which she paired with black patent Louboutin booties and a bright yellow tote by Kenzo.

Although we adore Cox’s entire outfit, her sunny tote is the object of our envy. The cheerful Kenzo Kalifornia Tote, made of luxurious calfskin leather, comes at a not-so-cheerful price however: the pink version of the tote is currently on sale on ShopBop for $794.50, but originally retailed for $1,135. Because we won’t be paying anywhere near $794.50 to copy Cox’s look, we decided to find a couple of options to mimic her chic yellow tote for less.

To copy the shape of Cox’s Kenzo tote, we chose the Rebecca Minkoff Mab Tote Mini from Zappos.com. Available in a strikingly similar electric yellow, this tote is the perfect option to imitate not only the structured look of Cox’s tote but also its eye-catching color. What makes this tote even better is its lower price tag of $195!

To incorporate the zipper details on Cox’s tote, we chose the Milly Astor Pebbled Dome Satchel Bag in Limeade. Although this bag comes in a dome satchel style that is different from Cox’s box-style tote, it still offers the same bold yellow featuring zipper hardware across the front. This tote will make your wardrobe and your wallet happy, coming it at only $147 at Neiman Marcus LastCall.

So there you have it — two great options to take Laverne Cox’s bold yellow tote style for less. With two gorgeous, high-quality bags priced under $200, one of them is sure to find its way into your wardrobe!

Take Her Look [For Less]

Leave it to Queen Bey to wear an all-black look in the middle of summer and still look as cool as can be. According to Vogue, the singer was spotted in New York City on Tuesday in head to toe black, wearing a knit dress with a thigh-high slit and cutout at the waist which she paired with a leather motorcycle jacket and simple black pumps.

Vogue reports that Beyoncé’s leg-baring dress is by Self-Portrait, which we found is a racer-style dress priced at $290 ( to purchase this exact dress, click here!). If spending $290 on a single dress isn’t in the style cards for you this summer, read on! We decided to try to recreate this look from head to toe for under $200 and came up with some pretty great pieces that can be worn as a cohesive look or separately, giving you the most bang for your buck!

To mimic the neckline of the dress, we found the Next Veneration Black Strappy Crop Top from Lulu’s. This top will create the illusion of a cutout at the waist, while also showing a little more skin via the sexy back cutouts. This top is available at Lulus.com for only $27.

Recreating the skirt of Beyoncé’s dress proved to be a fairly difficult task, but we finally landed on the Steal Your Heart Skirt from Tobi. Although this skirt is much longer than that of the Self-Portrait dress, its thigh-high leg slit still shows just as much skin, imitating the overall shape of the slit. This skirt comes in at an even $40 and is available at Tobi.com.

We couldn’t leave off Beyoncé’s edgy motorcycle jacket that was so effortlessly draped over her shoulders, so we opted for this gorgeous Quilted Faux Leather Moto Jacket from Forever 21. Forever 21 makes great faux leather jackets that look and feel just like real leather, so don’t be surprised when your friends ask how you were able to afford the same jacket Beyoncé wore! This beautiful piece is a great addition to any wardrobe and is incredibly affordable at only $34.90 on Forever21.com.

Finding affordable black pumps to match Beyoncé’s was a piece of cake — we decided to stick with Forever 21 and go for their Faux Leather Pointed Pumps, which offer a classic silhouette for an affordable $19.90.

We couldn’t leave off the little bit of bling at Beyoncé’s feet — her sparkly silver anklet. We found a sterling silver ankle bracelet from Overstock to match Beyoncé’s look for only $32.99.

So now that you have all the pieces to recreate Beyoncé’s chic NYC style, how much will it set you back? Not as much as you think — all of these pieces total only $154.79, a full $45 under our $200 budget! And what’s more: all of these pieces are versatile enough to be worn with other pieces, which maximizes the investment in each of these items. That’s a win-win in our opinion!

Take Her Look [For Less]

The streets of New York City have been a little more fashionable now that Jennifer Lawrence has been spending more time in the city. The Daily Mail reports that the actress, who has been house hunting in The Big Apple for the past month, was spotted yesterday in Tribeca wearing an all-black crop top ensemble. According to VogueLawrence’s bustier-style crop top and pencil skirt are from the Michael Kors Collection, which she styled with an Ana Khouri necklace, Roger Vivier clutch and Jimmy Choo gladiators.

It’s hard not to envy Lawrence’s entire outfit from head to toe, but what THL covets the most are those gorgeous Jimmy Choo heels. While these gladiators effortlessly tie in her gold clutch and necklace with their gold heels, their price tag is not effortlessly affordable — they originally retail for $950 at NET-A-PORTER, but they are on sale for lofty $570. However, if you lover Lawrence’s trendy gladiator style, there are a few other options out there that can mimic her style at a fraction of the cost.

If you love the combination of black and gold on Lawrence’s Jimmy Choo heels, Luichiny combines the two in a comparable gladiator heel. The Take A Bow heel does have more straps and more gold accents running across the top of the foot, but it is just as stylish and easy to wear as Lawrence’s similar style. These heels, however, are available at Heels.com for only $99.

Nordstrom Rack offers another alternative to Lawrence’s Jimmy Choos, and what makes this pair so great is that they are under $100. The Beatrice High Heel Sandal by Modern Rush has a similar strap pattern to Lawrence’s heels, while still offering a hint of gold in the side zipper. These heels were originally priced at $79.99, but Nordstrom Rack has them for only $34.97!

So if you love Jennifer Lawrence’s gladiators but can’t bear the thought of spending over $500 for a shoe that is supposedly “on sale,” give one of these similarly stylish options a try! And don’t forget to pair them with some gold accessories to bring your whole look together!

She Leads, You Follow: Solange Knowles

Leave it to Solange Knowles to revamp the classic double-breasted pant suit. Vogue reported that the singer and famous sister of Beyoncé Knowles stepped out earlier this week to attend Kiehl’s kickoff party for Pride in a yellow and taupe colorblocked suit which she paired with a white pointy-toe pump and ruby red lip. The suit is from a line called Harbison, which touts itself as an androgynous women’s clothing line, speaking to both the “vulnerability and strength, to the hard and the soft” in all people.

Knowles breathed some life into the double-breasted suit style in a few subtle, yet important ways, so here’s what to keep an eye on if you want to recreate her look:

  1. Color can be a game-changer – By wearing the suit in a colorblocked look, Knowles is changing the overall tone of the suit, making it more fun than business-oriented. Notice, however, that she did not compromise fit or shape to achieve this more relaxed vibe; the suit is tailored to perfection, giving her a strong shoulder and defining her waistline by having the yellow in the jacket begin exactly at her natural waist.
  2. Play with contradictions – Knowles makes this look more evening and party appropriate by leaving her neckline open and showing just a peek of cleavage, which contradicts the hard lines of the exaggerated lapel and the overall connotation of a suit being strictly for ‘business.’ Playing with contradictions like ‘sexy vs. business’ or ‘sweet vs. edgy’ can help create visual interest in an outfit without having to rely on accessories and flashy details; figuring out the contradictions becomes a sort of ‘psychological accessory,’ making the outfit much more intriguing.
  3. Small details matter – If you notice, Knowles picked up on the white of the big, whimsical buttons on her blazer and carried that over into her shoes. This creates a more unified, cohesive look, allowing for white to become a sort of motif recurrent in the ensemble; even though her outfit is only three pieces (blazer, trousers and shoes), it seems like there is so much more going on because there are many small details to pay attention to and think about. Making sure that all the details of an outfit work together will make your outfit that much more pulled together, and it will leave people thinking about how you managed to put such an interesting outfit together.

Take Her Look [For Less]

If you thought monochromatic was boring, Selena Gomez just proved you wrong. EOnline reported yesterday that Gomez was spotted in New York City earlier this week wearing an all black and white ensemble upon the release of her latest single, “Good For You,” and she showed us all that black and white is certainly good for her!

Gomez wore a black and white Balmain crop top (which she actually wore backwards so the zipper detail was in the front), pairing the top with high-waisted L’Agence trousers, Saint Laurent pointy-toe booties, a Gucci crossbody bag and Saint Laurent sunglasses.

While Gomez looks stunning in this outfit, what is perhaps most stunning is how much this complete outfit costs. EOnline reports that the completed look totaled $3,311, with her shoes alone making up a third of the price at $1,050! But, if you want to take Gomez’s look for less, you are in luck – we set out to recreate her entire look for only $150, and what we found may shock you!

The first order of business was finding a black and white crop top that was even remotely close to Gomez’s $611 Balmain top, which was no easy task. But, we managed to find a similar color-blocked style at Tobi — the Cross it Over Crop Top offers a black and white colorblock look with a high neckline reminiscent of Gomez’s Balmain look, but it has some cutouts that Gomez’s top does not have. What this top also has that Gomez’ top doesn’t is a small price tag: this top comes in at a reasonable $44!

Finding high-waisted black trousers sounds like it should be easy, but it actually was the hardest part of the process. After some searching, THL finally landed on the Trouser We Go Black High-Waisted Pants from Lulu’s. Although this trousers have the same high-waistline, they do not have the same wide-leg look, but it still creates a chic look nonetheless. These fitted trousers come in at $37, compared to Gomez’s $295 pair.

Because Gomez’s $1,050 Saint Laurent booties were completely covered by her trousers, we decided to go for a simple pointy-toe pump instead. We found these classic faux leather pointy-toe pumps from Forever 21 for only $19.90 to mimic the shape of Gomez’s booties without actually seeing the rest of the shoe.

Gomez’s logo-embossed $980 Gucci crossbody bag certainly cannot be duplicated, so we opted for a simple brown faux leather crossbody with a knotted detail on the front flap. This bag has a similar rich cognac tone to Gomez’s Gucci bag, but it definitely does not have the same price tag, coming it at only $22.90 at Forever 21.

Dark-tinted aviators complete the duplicate look for only $5.90 at Forever 21 — who could tell that these sunglasses aren’t the same $375 Saint Laurent glasses that Gomez is wearing?!

THL set out to recreate Selena Gomez’s $3,311 monochromatic look for less than $150, so how did we do? Our pieces from Tobi, Lulu’s and Forever 21 totaled only $129.70, affording this pricey look to all those who admire it! So if you love Gomez’s look but couldn’t get past the price, take our lead and try out some of our recommendations! Happy shopping!
