What could possibly make the holiday season more magical? Perhaps Nicki Minaj as a fairy in a new campaign for H&M will do the trick.
According to ELLE, the rapper takes center stage in the retailer’s holiday campaign film, which debuts on Nov. 28. The video “details the story of a little girl hunting down Santa Claus’ evil brother in order to save the holidays,” says ELLE, where Minaj plays the mother of the girl and magical fairy named Wisest Thingy.
ELLE reports that the film also shows off H&M’s new holiday styles, which went on sale in stores and online Nov. 9. While the campaign is a way to promote their latest designs, for Minaj, the story of the film is equally important.
“I love the film’s overall empowering message,” she said. “I love seeing this young girl become the champion that lives in all of us. There’s always magic in the air during the Holidays.”
Be sure to check out the film when it drops on hm.com on Nov. 28.
Nicki Minaj isn’t just the queen of rap; she’s apparently the queen of charitable donations.
According to The Cut, the rapper recently took to Instagram to reveal photos and videos of a village in India she has “been donating money to for the past few years through her pastor Lydia Sloley.”
Minaj shared in her posts that her generosity has helped to provide the village with “a Computer Center, a Tailoring Institute, a Reading Program and 2 WATER WELLS,” says The Cut, writing that she’s telling of her charitable missions in case her fans would like to join in her efforts.
These Instagram posts follow her recent Twitter donation spree, in which she helped students with their tuition and student loans and is leading to the creation of a charity specifically for students.
We can’t wait to see what Minaj does next!
Last week, Nick Minaj made headlines by offering to pay her fans’ student loans and tuition on Twitter. Now, the rapper is making headlines again for looking to make a habit out of the payments.
According to The Cut, Minaj not only shared the receipts from her recent giving spree on Instagram (which topped $18,000), she also wrote that she is going to launch her efforts as an official charity.
“This makes me so happy,” she wrote in reference to the initial payments she made, The Cut reports. “I’ll do another impromptu payment spree in a month or 2 but pls know that I’m launching my official charity for Student Loans/Tuition Payments VERY SOON! You’ll be able to officially sign up! I’ll keep you posted!”
Official details have yet to be announced, says The Cut, but we will certainly be keeping an eye out!
Paying for college can be a daunting task, but Nicki Minaj just made some of her fans’ pursuit of higher education a little easier.
According to TIME, after a fan tweeted her asking the rapper to pay her college tuition in the midst of a contest to join Minaj at the Billboard Music Awards, she responded by saying “Show me straight A’s that I can verify w/ur school and I’ll pay it. Who wants to join THAT contest?!?! Dead serious. Shld I set it up?”
From there, the #NickiBBMAs contest turned into getting her attention to have her pay for fans’ college tuitions, textbooks and even student loans, says TIME, and Minaj responded asking some to direct message her with their contact information.
TIME reports that by the time she concluded the spree, “Minaj said she would pay for about 30 fans’ college tuition, student loans or other education-related fees. The fees ranged from $500 to books to $6,000 for tuition.”
Glamour says Minaj spent $50,000 in total paying for her fans’ education,” all of whom provided proof that the money was for school.”
Minaj’s generosity will not be forgotten, that’s for sure.
Being named to TIME Magazine‘s list of the 100 most influential people is nothing short of a big deal. And when Nicki Minaj earned a spot of the elite list, she used her platform to make a statement on equal pay.
According to The Huffington Post, Minaj told the magazine that working in the music industry thus far has taught her a lot about how to command the respect she deserves. “One thing I learned along the way in business,” she said in the interview, “is the necessity to be unapologetic about asking for how much money you deserve.”
But don’t think she has only recently become interested in attaining equal pay; instead, the rap star has always been a proponent of the cause.
“At a very early stage in my rap career, I was making six figures for shows,” she said. “If I heard there was another rapper making that, I thought, ‘you know what? I get out there and demand or command a crowd. I get out there and make my fans happy. I get out there and give a real show. I want that, too.’ And I pushed myself to be better with my showmanship, but I also decided, you know what? I want to be compensated well.”
While Minaj has never been shy about speaking up for herself in business negotiations, she believes many women are often hesitant about advocating on their own behalf.
“I think women have the tendency to feel that they shouldn’t ask to be compensated as much as a man doing the same exact thing,” she told TIME.
But, she said, this shouldn’t hold women back: “If you know you’re great at what you do, don’t ever be ashamed to ask for the top dollar in your field.”
The BET Awards took place last night in Los Angeles, and while the award show itself was a can’t miss, there were also a ton of can’t miss fashions on the red carpet. Here are just a few of our favorite looks of the night:
Ciara wowed on the red carpet last night with boyfriend Russell Wilson, wearing a beaded gunmetal Wes Gordon dress which she paired with a similar gunmetal-colored heel. She kept her jewelry and accessories to a minimum, letting her stunning dress and her equally stunning beauty speak for itself.
Although she wore a different dress on the red carpet of the BET Awards, the black and white ensemble Nicki Minaj wore during the show was something to be admired. Replete with cutouts at the bust and waist, Minaj looked breathtakingly beautiful in this edgy take on a classic combination, which she punched up with a pair of sparkly tri-tone Rene Caovilla t-strap pumps.
Gabrielle Union kept it classy in a sparkly black Harlston Heritage gown that featured a halter neckline and subtly sexy cutouts at the waist. Union kept the rest of her accessories fairly simple, wearing a few white bracelets and carrying a black clutch.
Perhaps our favorite look of the night came from Nicole Ari Parker, who wore a white longsleeve gown with lace paneling detail. She paired the white-hot look with medium-sized chandelier earrings, although we think her best accessory was husband Boris Kodjoe, who matched his wife in a summery all-white look.
As always, there are some important things we can learn from these red carpet looks to spruce up what we wear everyday — because as they say, the world is our runway (or in this case, our red carpet!). Here’s what to remember:
- Try metal tones – Although you may think metal tones are only reserved for, well, metals, Ciara showed us that metal tones can look great on shoes and even dresses. Metallics like gunmetal are technically neutrals, so pieces in tones like gunmental, gold, silver or bronze are multifunctional because they can be paired with pretty much any color. If you want to introduce some metal tones/metallics into your wardrobe, start small. Try a strappy sandal like those worn by Ciara to get a taste of the metallic in your wardrobe. Once you get the hang of incorporating it into your wardrobe, upgrade to metallic bags or even an awesome metallic blazer (which can be a great piece for a girl’s night out!).
- Black and white is always a good idea – You can never go wrong with black and white, and Nicki Minaj certainly proved that in her BET Awards ensemble. What is particularly great about her outfit is that she wore the classic combination in a way that was refreshing and a bit sexy, adapting the classic to her own personality. If you want to wear black and white but are hesitant about looking dated, try to find pieces that are structurally different so the colors end up being presented in a new way. Try a fun crop top, a striped asymmetrical pencil skirt or even a shoe that takes black and white to the next level.
- Cutouts and paneling, oh my! – Gabrielle Union’s gorgeous gown showed us that cutouts are a great way to create shape in an outfit while also showing off a little skin in a nontraditional way. If you want to try out some cutouts, start small. The best place to start with cutouts to create shape is at the natural waist, so look for a dress or top that shows a little bit of skin at your natural waistline, but be sure not to show too much skin elsewhere (i.e. cleavage). If you just like the idea of cutouts in general, try a piece with a simple front and cutouts in the back; this not only acts as a little surprise in your outfit, but it also ensures that you’ll look good coming and going! But if the idea of showcasing open skin is a little scary, Nicole Ari Parker showed us another great option: paneling. The lace paneling in her gown functions in a similar way to cutouts by being able to create shape, while also showing just a little peek of skin. If paneling is more your speed, you can still look for pieces that have either mesh or lace paneling at the natural waist to create shape, or paneling at the back to create a visually interesting outfit.
