‘OINTB’ star unveils new clothing line

Clothing isn’t just about fulfilling a basic need; it can be a deeply personal means of expressing yourself. So when a designer creates a clothing line out of their needs, wishes and dreams, it’s sure to be something special.

Take the new clothing collection created by Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks. According to HuffPost, the actor teamed up with plus clothing line Universal Standard to design a capsule collection based on one simple question: “If you could design three pieces that you always wished you had in your closet but could never find, what would they be?”

With that in mind, Glamour says Brooks designed a “short and sweet” line, offering three pieces consisting of overalls, an off-the-shoulder sweater dress and a pleated shirtdress. While a collection of only three pieces may seem a bit too compact, Brooks told Glamour that the first thing she thought of when creating the line was designing something “transformable.”

“I was thinking, You know what could be cool? Having something that is transformable,” she said. “I chose the off-the-shoulder dress, because I felt like this is something I was just comfortable wearing. So if I’m on a plane and I want to be casual, then I step [out of the airport] and there’s paparazzi in my face and I want to feel a little more glamorous, I can take this dress either direction.”

The final two pieces — the overalls and shirt dress — were created from two different inspirations, Brooks told Glamour: the former to fit and flatter curvy figures and the latter to riff off a shirt she saw Solange Knowles wear. HuffPost reports that all of the pieces are under $200, with the sweater dress coming in at $190, the shirtdress at $110 and the overalls at $120, all available in sizes 10 to 28.

Armed with three looks that offer women of all sizes an effortless style, Brooks shared with Glamour that, even though they are her designs, she still can’t quite believe that she had the chance to do such a thing.

“…It’s crazy to finally have clothes out there that I designed. That never ever crossed my mind when I was a teenager, shopping at Walmart looking in the men’s section.”


Brooks teams up with Universal Standard for new clothing line

Fall is about to become even more fashionable, thanks to a new collaboration between Danielle Brooks and Universal Standard.

According to HuffPost, the Orange is the New Black star is taking her talents off screen to try her hand at clothing design, teaming up with size 10-28 fashion company, Universal Standard, to craft the brand’s Tria collection. Announced by Brooks on Instagram last week, the actor shared a sneak peak of some styles from her line, says HuffPost, modeling a merlot-hued sweater dress over a crisp white button-down shirt, which she paired with patent leather oxfords.

“Beyond excited about this collaboration with this amazing brand!” she wrote in the photo’s caption. “You’ll soon be able to shop this look and a few others. Can’t wait to show you more.”

Brooks’ designs are part the second installment of Universal Standard’s ongoing Tria collection, says HuffPost, which “prompts women to design three pieces that they always wished they had in their closet but could never find.” According to the brand, Brooks’ three-piece collection, which debuts in November, will hold a mirror to Universal Standard’s “established downtown, yet classic, aesthetic, and Danielle’s strong personal style.”

Denim done right by Torrid

Shopping for jeans can be a loathsome process; search around the Internet and you’ll find that women everywhere largely dislike shopping for the wardrobe staple. But hitting the stores for denim doesn’t have to be frustrating — that seems to be the message behind new ads from Torrid.

According to the Huffington Post, the plus-size retailer recently unveiled a new campaign featuring 11 women — a mix of actresses, models and customers — each donning denim from Torrid’s collection. The best part of the ad: each woman is wearing denim that fits and flatters her curves, thus proving that it is possible to find jeans that make you feel confident and not frustrated.

Included in the ad for the size 10-30 retailer was Orange is the New Black star Adrienne C. Moore, who shared her “empowering” experience with the Huffington Post.

“Meeting all these ladies following their dreams and passions, it was really empowering to hear all their different stories,” she said, according to the Huffington Post. “From a fashion standpoint, it looked amazing. It was so interesting to see the array of denim and styles accentuating everyone’s beautiful curves.”

Model Philomena Kwao also posed for the ad, later telling the Huffington Post that what struck her most about the experience was the diversity among the group of women. “It is an incredible thing to be a part of an inspiring group of women, all of us different sizes, ages and races come together. We all looked amazing,” she shared.

Despite their superficial differences, Kwao told the Huffington Post that they all had one thing in common: a belief that clothing should be affordable and make women feel comfortable in their own skin.

“It was like we were all old friends, united in the belief that every woman, regardless of size, age, race or sexuality should have access to affordable clothing that makes them feel beautiful and allows them to express themselves.”

She Leads, You Follow: OINTB Orangecon Edition

On Thursday, June 11, the orange carpet was rolled out for the stars of Orange is the New Black as the third season of the hit show on Netflix went live. And although the third season going live on Netflix is something to be excited about, the fashion on their Orangecon orange carpet certainly ‘arrested’ our attention. Here are just a few of THL’s favorite looks from the ladies of Orange is the New Black:

“Crazy Eyes”(aka Uzo Aduba) looks far from crazy in this gorgeous color-blocked gown. This gown not only pairs two beautiful colors together, it also pairs two textures: the bodice is crafted in a sunshine yellow leather, while the skirt is done in a turquoise chiffon. The cut of this dress is perfect for Aduba’s frame, with the yellow leather ending right in her natural waistline and the skirt pulling away from her hips into a slight A-line, while the thigh-high slit gives the fairly conservative dress just a hint of sexiness. Aduba paired the gown with neutral gold heel with a matching gold frame clutch, keeping her accessories quite minimal.

While Aduba kept her look sweet and simple, Laverne Cox walked the orange carpet in a much edgier look. Cox wore a leather motorcycle jacket, which she styled with a grey top tied at the waist and a black pencil skirt. What gives this outfit its true edge is its accessories: a spikey silver statement necklace, black leather driving gloves and black beaded pointy-toe pumps. The beading on Cox’s pumps isn’t just any kind of beading; this beading mimics the look studs, adding just a little roughness to something as girly as sparkly beading.

Color-blocking seemed to be the trend of the night, as Danielle Brooks also strut her stuff down the orange carpet in a color-blocked ensemble, this time in classic black and white. Brooks paired a simple black top with a white semi-sheer midi skirt, allowing Brooks to show a little bit of skin while still maintaining some modesty. She accessorized her outfit with a thick black and silver belt to accentuate her narrow waist, along with a marbled black and white clutch, a simple silver bracelet and sexy black lace-up heels.

Just because her look was simple doesn’t mean it’s not a showstopper! Vicky Jeudy wowed in this white-hot, one-shouldered jumpsuit that was tailored to perfection. Jeudy kept the styling of her outfit very minimalistic, wearing only nude single-strap heels and a long earring. What’s great about Jeudy’s jumpsuit is that not only is it dressy enough to walk the red carpet, but it is also a comfortable option – her jumpsuit even has pockets that blend right into the pleating around her waist!

Here are a few things to remember from the leading ladies of Orange is the New Black:

  1. Go for color-blocking – Both Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks wore color-blocked outfits to Orangecon, but both did so in different ways. Aduba went for bolder colors, but was sure to wear colors that had the same base; the turquoise in the skirt has a base of yellow, allowing to create a unified look with the yellow top. Brooks went for a more classic pairing with black and white, but she wore a semi-sheer skirt and bolder accessories to provide a fresh take on a timeless combination.
  2. Don’t be afraid to be a little edgy – Laverne Cox incorporated a lot of edgier pieces into her look, from her leather motorcycle jacket to her driving gloves to her pumps. If you liked her edgy look, but are afraid of looking too avant-garde, try incorporating one piece at a time into your outfits. For example, start out with a motorcycle jacket paired with something a little softer; leather and lace is always a great combination – the leather adds some toughness to the lace, while the lace can help to soften the severity of the motorcycle style. Or try pump like Cox’s that mimics the look of studs while keeping the girliness of the sparkly beading.
  3. Simple is a good thing – As Vicky Jeudy showed us, simple doesn’t mean boring. Sometimes, wearing a simpler outfit allows for the finer details of the clothing and accessories to be seen and truly appreciated. And what’s more: keeping your outfits simple and minimal can allow for not only the beauty of the clothing to be seen, but also for your true beauty to shine through!
