She Leads, You Follow: Oscars After Party Edition

After a night of stunning red carpet looks for the 88th annual Academy Awards, the after parties brought on a host of other high fashion ensembles that may have topped those from the awards.

Trading in her Dior Haute Couture ceremony gown for an Alexander Wang number, Jennifer Lawrence attended the after parties in a custom two-piece gown featuring a bustier top with barbell piercing and a black skirt with the same details stitching together a thigh-high slit, says InStyle. The Joy actress topped off her look with Anita Ko jewelry, an Alexander Wang bucket bag and metallic sandals.

Rachel McAdams headed out for a celebratory night in a light pink Naeem Khan number with head-to-toe beading, according to InStyle. The sexy look came courtesy of a deep V-neckline and a thigh-high slit, in addition to her platform silver heels.

Lady Gaga gave an alternative look, wearing an ultra-chic jumpsuit that was a custom creation by Brandon Maxwell, says ELLE. Featuring a peplum and a demi-skirted bottom, the “Til It Happens to You” singer completed her look with diamond earrings and an old Hollywood glam hairstyle.

Following suit in another custom ensemble was Mindy Kaling, who worked the after-party circuit in a tailor-made Salvador Perez number says ELLE. The quasi-tuxedo style gown featured an asymmetrical satin lapel with beading on the other side of the bodice. The Mindy Project star showed some skin in a deep V-neckline and side slit that grazed the top of her thigh.

Elizabeth Banks attended the after parties in a Ralph & Russo gown with a semi-sheer lace  beaded bodice, from which a dramatic cape flowed from her shoulders to the hemline of the gown, according to ELLE. Banks completed her regal look with a small frame clutch and an upswept hairdo.

Although these ladies are dressed to party the night away after the film industry’s most important celebration, there is one very important thing we can learn from their looks to apply to the way we dress every day:

While fit, V-necklines and embellishments can all combine to create fashionable looks, confidence is the most important thing you can ‘wear’ with any outfit. If you are confident in who you are, you will feel confident in what you’re wearing; this will shine through, allowing beautiful you to be the star of your look while your fashionable outfit will play a supporting role. Looking great on the outside is great, but knowing you’re great on the inside is worth so much more.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Snow isn’t the only bright white we’ve seen this winter.

On Friday, Feb. 5, Rachel McAdams took to the red carpet of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, continuing the awards season circuit for her role in Spotlight, in which she plays journalist Sacha Pfeiffer.

Attending a screening of her film in what PopSugar says is a Jonathan Simkhai burnout midi dress, McAdams paired her stark white number with Christian Louboutin heels and some flashy diamonds.

McAdams’ film festival ensemble makes for a no-fuss look, but its price, however, is not so simple. The sleeveless burnout midi dress is available at Neiman Marcus for a lofty $1,295, and let’s not forget that she’s also wearing Louboutins, which are always pricey. While her look may cost upwards of $1,200, we’ve found all the pieces necessary to recreate her entire look for under $200. Read on for the results!

McAdams’ Jonathan Simkhai dress is certainly unique, but we were able to find its perfect replacement in the form of the Tiger Mist One Love Lace Midi Dress from Forever 21. Featuring a similar spaghetti strap construction and a lace skirt to rival her quasi-mermaid look, this dress will deliver a sweet style reminiscent of McAdams’ ensemble for only $89.90.

While McAdams’ film festival look costs well beyond her Jonathan Simkhai dress’s $1,295 price tag, our look-alike ensemble will only set you back $134.85 — and don’t forget to add a bright red lipstick to polish off your look!

She Leads, You Follow: NYC ‘Southpaw’ Premiere Edition

Movie premieres always bring out incredible fashion, and the ladies at the New York City premiere of Southpaw on July 20 certainly did not disappoint. The premiere, which took place at AMC Loews Lincoln Square, seemed to have its own implicit dress code — black and white. And while that sounds like it could be dull, off-the-shoulder dresses, interesting necklines and cutouts made it anything but boring.

Rachel McAdams walked the premiere’s red carpet in what InStyle reported was a bare-shouldered tea length black dress by Self-Portrait, featuring a triangle cutout at the waist. She kept her hair and makeup dewy and fresh, while also keeping her accessories simple with Tiffany and Co. jewelry and Stuart Weitzman sandals.

Naomie Harris’ white-hot red carpet dress provided a little bit of contrast to McAdams’ all-black ensemble. Harris strut her stuff down the carpet in a beautiful one-shoulder Cushnie et Ochs dress, complete with a side slit and deep sweetheart neckline. InStyle reports that the actress polished off her look with a silver clutch by Rauwolf and black-capped pumps.

Dascha Polanco brought the party to the black-and-white-attired affair in a sexy black top with cutouts outlining the neckline and a bare back paired with high-waisted trousers, The Daily Mail reports. The Orange is the New Black star paired her sultry look with an oversized envelope clutch and strappy black heels.

Although these gorgeous ladies were decked out to rock the red carpet, there are certain things we can take away from their style and apply in the way we dress everyday:

  1. Pick a focal point – Rachel McAdams’ dress focuses mostly on her collarbone and shoulders via the off-the-shoulder neckline, while also focusing on her waist through the dress’s triangular cutout. Notice, however, that the length of the gown compensates for all of the skin shown on the top half of her body. By having a longer hemline on the dress, she is allowing for the top half of her body to be the focal point of her outfit. If the hemline of the dress were shorter and showed more leg, there would be too much skin showing, causing us to not know what exactly to zero in on. When you are planning an outfit, keep in mind what you want the focal point of that outfit to be; if you choose a top or dress with a plunging neckline, make sure that the hemline of the dress hits at least at the knee (if not a little lower) to ensure that your neckline is the sole point of attention. If you wish to make your legs the star of the show, pick a top or a dress with a higher neckline so any bare skin at your shoulders and chest won’t compete with your exposed legs.
  2. Sweethearts are universally flattering – The beautiful sweetheart neckline of Naomie Harris’ dress not only adds visual interest to her dress, it also opens up her neckline and emphasizes her bust. Sweetheart necklines, and their many iterations, are universally flattering for the sole fact that they open up your neckline. To emphasize your bustline, try a sweetheart style similar to Harris’ deeper, more architectural-style neckline; this neckline shows a little more skin, but it also has built-in structure, making it very easy to wear. If the idea of a deeper sweetheart is a little bit scary, look for deeper sweethearts that either have a one-shoulder detail like Harris’ dress or have a mesh overlay; this way, you still have the comfort of material or straps at your shoulders while also keeping the integrity of the neckline.
  3. Separates can be cohesive – We could have sworn that Dascha Polanco’s black top and pants combo was a jumpsuit, but her outfit was a great way of showing us that separates can really create a cohesive look. Keeping the separates in a dark neutrals (like black or navy) helps create a unified look while also creating a seamless transition between pieces. This could also be done in all white, allowing for a crisp, clean look that is simultaneously classic and edgy.
