Candie’s gets a creative director

An accessible fashion and accessory line for juniors, Candie’s has been a staple at Kohl’s department stores since 2005. But for the first time ever, the brand is getting a creative director to aid in their upcoming ad campaigns.

According to InStyle, Candie’s has enlisted the help of Sarah Hyland to take on the first position of its kind within the company. The first item on the job description for the 25-year-old Modern Family actress will be to take a starring role in the brand’s fall 2016 and spring 2017 campaigns.

But her duties won’t end there. Hyland will not only offer her style expertise and provide an overall creative vision for the brand, InStyle says she will also style the fall back-to-school campaign.

While InStyle notes that previous campaigns from Candie’s have included the likes of Britney Spears, Vanessa Hudgens and Fifth Harmony, Hyland has already expressed her excitement to not only follow suit in becoming a “Candie’s girl,” but also in assuming the role of the brand’s first creative director.

“I grew up looking at Candie’s ads and hearing my friends’ experiences as Candie’s girls, Hyland said in a statement, “but the added influence of being named the first Creative Director is really exciting for me. I love fashion, it’s part of who I am.”

Eager to start her new position, Hyland said, “I love that I get to have influence on this line because not only are the clothes really fashion-forward, but they are offered at an affordable price-point, which means fans of mine can afford what we’re selling.”

Take Her Look [For Less]

Wearing a cream-colored lace dress with cutouts in the middle of winter may sound wrong, but when Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland wore the very thing to the ELLE  Women in Television dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 20, it was very, very right.

Hyland attended the West Hollywood affair in what InStyle says is a cream Zimmermann frock with cutouts on the sides that gave way to an open back. She completed her look with nude Giuseppe Zanotti heels and sparkly Anita Ko rings.

Although Hyland’s look seems as though it came straight off the runway, a few modifications were made to the dress to make it the chic look she wore to the Women in Television dinner. According to The Daily Mail, the original number from Zimmermann’s Spring 2016 collection not only has sleeves, but also a ruffled hemline and lace-covered cutouts.

While this may mean you can’t take Hyland’s exact look for your own, there’s still hope for her gorgeous Giuseppe Zanotti heels — or so we thought. Her patent leather tri-strap sandals cost a whopping $850 from Net-a-Porter. But don’t let the high price spoil your attempt to recreate Hyland’s ensemble, because we’ve found all the pieces necessary to take her look for less than $200. Read on for the results!

Finding a lace dress with similar features to Hyland’s altered dress was quite the struggle, but we finally landed on the ASOS Lace Crop Top Skater Dress. Featuring a high neckline and sheer lace back, this dress gives similar hints of skin that Hyland’s dress does, but without dramatic alterations. The cropped layer also emphasizes your waist in a way akin to the fringe on the top of Hyland’s frock. The best apart about this dress — it’s currently on sale for $39.

Although these sandals have one strap more that Hyland’s heels, they share the same basic silhouette and style, making them a great way to finish off your look-alike ensemble for only $51.

She Leads, You Follow: ‘Star Wars’ Premiere Edition

The fashion force was certainly with those in attendance of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere in Hollywood, California. The Dec. 14 event that took over three theaters on Hollywood Boulevard — The Dolby Theatre, the TCL Chinese Theatre and El Capitan Theatre — brought out the stars of the film and other Hollywood A-listers who were all decked out to celebrate the long-awaited film’s debut.

Wowing us with an out-of-this-world style was none other than Lupita Nyong’o, who took to the premiere’s red carpet in what InStyle says is a Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture gown. Her green and silver crystal-drenched gown was offset by cutouts marked by black satin bands. Adding bling on top of bling, Nyong’o completed her stunning ensemble with Chopard jewelry.

Following suit in a sparkly number of her own was Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland, who worked the red carpet in a glitzy black mini-dress. She completed her look with fringe-embellished black sandals and some diamond jewelry.

Although Nyong’o and Hyland are dressed for the galactic event of the year, there are some things we can learn from their looks to apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Go bold or go home – Nyong’o’s gown has many bold features, from its all-over crystal embellishment to its satin-trimmed cutouts. Fashion risks like these worked completely in her favor; the crystal embellishment added visual interest while the cutouts framed in satin accentuated her natural waist. All of these bold features were well planned and well placed, allowing the risks to pay off. She even paired her look with a bright red lip and sizeable diamond earrings — more bold choices. While sometimes it is best to incorporate only one bold element into your outfit at a time, there are moments when you can break all of the rules — just be sure that when you do break the rules, you are intentional about the way you do so. For example, Nyong’o added a large drop diamond earring not only to frame her face and her bold lip color, but to play off of  the crystals from her gown. Having a method to your madness always helps tie together your bold choices in a cohesive way.
  2. Don’t fear fringe – If you are intimidated by fringe, look no further than Hyland’s sandals as an example of how you can incorporate the trend into your wardrobe without overdoing it. Her sandals are a great way to try out fringe in small doses because each shoe only has one small tassel on the front to give just a taste of the trend. If you’d rather start even smaller, another great way to incorporate fringe into your outfits is through fringe jewelry; these pieces can range from necklaces to bracelets, and they’re great ways to add hints of the trend into your everyday looks.

She Leads, You Follow: amfAR Inspiration Gala Edition

Fashion and fundraising came together in the Oct. 29 amfAR Inspiration Gala, held at Milk Studios in Hollywood, California. Launched in 2010, the series aims to celebrate men’s style while also raising money for amfAR’s AIDS research programs. Last Thursday’s gala certainly accomplished both goals, with stars turning out high fashion to support the worthy cause.

One of our favorite looks of the night came courtesy of the always-fashionable Sarah Hyland, who wore a blush Jenny Packam gown with beaded embroidery. InStyle says Hyland completed her gala look with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Following Hyland in a more whimsical look was Diane Kruger, who donned a Carolina Herrera gown in a faint sheer pink with black and white embroidery. InStyle says that Kruger polished off her look with a Charlotte Olympia box clutch and Harry Winston jewelry.

Interrupting the parade of gowns was Zendaya, who opted for a tailored blazer and shorts suit. She injected her look with some femininity by adding a black strappy heel and floral earrings.

Lea Michele rounded out our favorite looks of the evening, wearing a coral strapless gown with an origami-style curved neckline. A diamond bracelet and earrings completed her gala look.

Although these ladies are dressed to impress on the red carpet of a charity gala, there are several things we can learn from their style and apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Simplicity makes a statement – All of these outfits have one thing in common: they are all fairly simple. While some included embroidery or beading, they all employ solid colors. While solid colors can sometimes be considered boring, these ensembles certainly prove otherwise. Their simplicity allows us to focus on each woman wearing the outfit; because we are not distracted by loud prints or overwhelming layers of material, which lets us see them and their natural beauty. When styled with bold jewelry, as these ladies did, it can create a striking, fashionable look.
  2.  Fit is everything – Another common thread running through each of these outfits is their fit; each ensemble is perfectly tailored, and good fit automatically elevates the inherent style of each piece. For example, Zendaya’s blazer fits perfectly at the shoulder and at the waist, accentuating her hourglass shape. Michele’s gown fits in a similar way, with the exaggerated neckline emphasizing her bust while the rest of the gown hugs her curves all the way down to its hemline.
  3. Proportional jewelry – Each woman also has jewelry that is proportional to their outfits; that is, because their outfits are simple, they could wear larger jewelry pieces. Notice, however, the mix of sizes in their jewelry; for example, in Michele’s outfit, she chose a smaller earring with a larger cuff bracelet. Kruger, though, opted for earrings and a bracelet that are fairly equal in size, while Zendaya chose for a bolder earring to counteract her menswear-inspired look. Hyland, however, chose the smallest jewelry, most likely to avoid competing with her bold lip color.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Red carpets are often reserved for movie premieres and award shows, but on October 12, the red carpet was rolled out for Cosmopolitan magazine’s 50th Birthday Celebration in West Hollywood, California. And with an abundance of celebrities — from Olivia Culpo to Maria Menounos — attending the event, there was no shortage of great fashion. But our favorite look happened to come courtesy of the always-fashionable Sarah Hyland.

The Modern Family star stepped out at Ysabel in what InStyle says is a sleek black pantsuit by DSquared2. Going for a sexier look, Hyland opted to go sans blouse, completing her look with a layered choker at her neck and sheer houndstooth pumps by Nicholas Kirkwood.

Hyland’s red carpet style is certainly the object of our envy, but its price is less than enviable. Her DSquared2 suit — which seems to be a single-button version of the Sergeant Suit — costs a lofty $2,960. Her Nicholas Kirkwood Prism Lace Houndstooth pumps also cost a pretty penny, totaling $598.26. With her outfit costing $3,558.26, taking her look for our own may be out of the question. Or is it? We set out to find all the pieces necessary to take her look for under $200, and the results may surprise you. Read on to see how we did!

First on our shopping list was a blazer worthy to serve as a substitute for Hyland’s DSquared2 number, and we found it in the form of the Satin Lapel Tailored Blazer from Missguided. This blazer features a single-button style and deep v-neckline reminiscent of Hyland’s jacket, while its satin lapel also invokes the sheen of her DSquared2 look. For as similar as these blazers are, they differ in one important area: price. This Missguided piece will only set you back $59.90.

To complete our pantsuit look are the ASOS Crop Trousers. Featuring a similar slim-cut and cropped-leg silhouette, these trousers will easily pass for Hyland’s DSquared trousers, but will only cost you $39.41.

Finding houndstooth pumps to compete with Hyland’s Nicholas Kirkwood style was no easy task, but we finally landed on the Martina Pointed Toe Pumps from Nine West. Although these pumps aren’t sheer, they feature an exact houndstooth pattern to replicate Hyland’s heels. These Nine West heels will polish off your outfit for only $59.99.

Although Sarah Hyland’s Cosmopolitan 50th Birthday Celebration look cost $3,558.26, we were able to recreate her entire look for less — a whole $3,392.06 less, with our look-alike ensemble will only set you back $166.20.

Take Her Look [For Less]

While Sunday night’s Emmys honored the most talented actors and actresses in television, the Emmys red carpet payed homage to the style of the small screen’s biggest stars. And as if their red carpet looks weren’t stylish enough, their after-party style was even better.

Take Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland. After wearing a gorgeous wine-colored Zac Posen gown on the Emmys red carpet, she opted for a black Kaufmanfranco swing dress for the Emmys after party, says InStyle. Her sweet little black dress featured a high neckline and an oversized bow at the back of her neck. She completed her look with some silver jewelry and black strappy heels.

Hyland took to the Emmys after party in style, but her style comes at a price. A similar Kaufmanfranco dress retailed originally for $2,995 at Forward, but if you love her post-award show style, we’ve found all the pieces necessary to recreate her look for less than $200. Read on for the results!

While nothing will ever quite compare to her bow-back Kaufmanfranco frock, we thought the High Neck Crepe Swing Dress from Missguided certainly came close. Featuring a similar high neckline and billowy silhouette, this dress could easily pass for Hyland’s look. But, the best part is that this look-alike dress is available at a fraction of the price, coming in at only $40.

Black strappy heels will complete our look for less, and there is no better pair for the job than the Jessica Simpson Sabreeni heels from 6pm. These sassy heels will finish off your new outfit for a mere $49.99.

She Leads, You Follow: 2015 Emmys Edition

The stars of the small screen took to the red carpet outside of the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on Sept. 20 to recognize the year’s stellar television performances at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. And while the award show itself brought some surprising wins, it should come as no surprise that the the red carpet prior to the main event showcased some stunning fashion. Although it was hard to pick our favorite looks, there were several leading ladies who led the pack with their red carpet style.

Sparkling in a silver St. John gown was none other than Sofía Vergara. The Modern Family star walked the red carpet in a body-hugging beaded gown with a strapless neckline and modified mermaid silhouette.

Viola Davis was the picture of elegance as she walked the red carpet with Julius Tennon on Sunday night. According to E! OnlineDavis wore a Carmen Marc Valvo gown, featuring dense black floral beading at the waist that dispersed as it neared the gown’s fuller A-line skirt. The highlight of Davis’ night was yet to come, however, as she went on to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her role in How to Get Away With Murder.

Keeping it simple in an all-black ensemble was Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen, who donned a Georges Chakra number for her walk down the red carpet. Featuring a multi-strap neckline and a trumpet skirt, Bowen took her gown to the next level by pairing it with bold jewelry and a shiny frame clutch.

The Good Wife’s Christine Baranski added a pop of color to the Emmys with her bright pink gown. Baranski walked the red carpet in an eye-catching hot pink gown, featuring a cap sleeve, a cutout at the neck and a defined waist. She completed her look with a gold clutch and gold jewelry.

Amy Poehler continued the cutout theme with her all-black ensemble, which featured  cutouts at the ribcages to accentuate her waist. The high-neck Michael Kors gown featured a column skirt that fell from her natural waist straight down to the floor. Poehler offset her minimalistic look by adding a stack of bold bangles to each wrist and dainty gold earrings to frame her face.

It seems like good style is all in the ‘family’, as Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland rocked the red carpet in a wine-colored Zac Posen gown. The dress featured an off-the-shoulder neckline (which created a cutout on the back of her dress) and a modified trumpet skirt. Hyland completed her red carpet look with a maroon bangle, beaded earrings and handfuls of rings.

Rounding out our favorite looks of the night was E! host Giuliana Rancic, who took her turn on the red carpet in a soft pink Zuhair Murad gown with all-over beading. The off-the-shoulder gown featured a defined waistline and soft, ethereal mermaid skirt.

Although these ladies are dressed to impress on the red carpet of the Emmys, there are certain elements of their glamorous gowns that we can apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Define your waist – The one common thread among these diverse gowns that they define a waist in some way, whether it’s through cutouts, like Amy Poehler’s dress; a simple band, like Giuliana Rancic’s dress; seaming, like Sarah Hyland’s gown; or even embellishments, like Viola Davis’ gown. Defining your waist allows you to create the illusion of a smaller frame, while also making it seem as though your legs begin at your natural waistline (making them look much longer than they are). Each gown defines the waistline in a unique way, so there’s no excuse not to do so in your own outfits every day!
  2. Less is more – There were some simple gowns on the red carpet, but simple doesn’t necessarily mean ‘boring.’ Amy Poehler, Sarah Hyland, Julie Bowen and Christine Baranski all wore solid-colored gowns, but they each had intrinsic features that made then stand out, such as cutouts, an off-the-shoulder neckline, a multi-strap neckline and intricate seaming respectively. They also punched up their looks with jewelry and accessories, which instantly added visual interest to the blank canvases of their gowns. It’s so easy to discredit a piece of clothing just because it’s not flashy or loud enough, but these ladies showed us that sometimes, less is more.
  3. Confidence is key – The most essential part of any outfit is something that cannot be bought: confidence. All of these women (and those we didn’t have space to discuss!) walked the red carpet with confidence in who they are. The expensive dresses, jewelry and shoes, the hair and makeup all add up to make a stunning red carpet look; but all of this doesn’t equal the priceless value of confidence. So no matter what you’re wearing, be confident in who you are and believe in your own beauty, because that’s worth so much more than the cost of your outfit.

She Leads, You Follow: Teen Choice Awards Edition

The blue carpet was rolled out on August 16 for the arrival of Hollywood’s rising young stars at the Teen Choice Awards. Held in Los Angele’s Galen Center, the star-studded event was as much about the fashion as it was about the awards, and what tremendous fashion there was!

One of the first looks to catch our eye came courtesy of Gina Rodriguez. According to PopSugar, the actress took to the Teen Choice Awards’ blue carpet in a gunmetal Alberta Ferretti dress, featuring the tiniest bit of beading and a crochet-like hemline. Rodriguez completed her look with dainty silver jewelry, nude pointed-toe pumps and  sultry loose waves.

Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale certainly looked pretty as she arrived to the Teen Choice Awards, wearing a blue and black minidress with a plunging, mesh-covered neckline. Hale swept her hair back in a sleek updo and kept the rest of her accessories quite simple, wearing minimal jewelry and pairing her sassy frock with a black Edie Parker clutch and strappy sandals.

Sarah Hyland added a splash of color to the awards, showing up in a cheerful yellow Christian Siriano crop top and shorts set, which she paired with the ever-popular strappy sandal by Stuart Weitzman. The Modern Family actress added another subtle punch of color with her blue earrings, but kept her bracelet neutral, wearing a sparkly silver bangle.

Although these gorgeous ladies are decked out for a red (or in this case, blue) carpet event, there are some things we can take away from their looks to apply to our everyday style:

  1. Small details have a large effect – Gina Rodriguez’s gunmetal grey dress shows us just how small details can come together to create something beautiful. Her dress is constructed in an almost net-like fashion with a nude underlay filling in the dead space. But on each of the ‘seams’ on the netting, there is a small bead that catches the light and adds some dimension to the dress. Finishing off the dress is a crocheted hemline, injecting a bit of femininity into what otherwise could’ve been a pretty edgy dress. No matter what you are shopping for — a dress, a top, a pair of pants or even shoes — look for small details like a subtle texture (like lace, crochet or netting) or shine that will work with the other elements of the piece to make a dimensional, multifaceted look.
  2. Pick a focal point – When putting together an outfit, it’s crucial to pick one focal point of the ensemble, whether it’s wearing a short skirt to show off your legs or wearing an open back to flaunt your back. In Lucy Hale’s case, she chose to wear a dress with a deep v-neckline, making her open neck her outfit’s main focus. Note that she kept her shoes and clutch black to blend in with the black in her dress while also keeping her accessories to a minimum — this allows the neckline of the dress to be the star of the outfit while all of the other components play a supporting role. When putting together an outfit, be sure to pick a focal point (like an open neckline) and don’t pair it with accessories that will compete with that focal point by trying to draw the eye elsewhere. For example, if you choose to wear a dress with a neon pink waist, don’t wear a shoe in an equally loud, contrasting color that will draw the eye away from that point; this will only segment your outfit and create two different areas of interest, making it difficult to spot where we should direct our attention.
  3. Brights will light up your day – Sarah Hyland’s bright yellow crop top and shorts set showed us just how flattering yellow can be. Brights, in general, are very skin tone-enhancing colors, but be careful with brights done in pastel — pastels, although beautiful, are desaturated colors, which can end up washing out those of us with pale complexions. If you want to try a bright color, take Hyland’s lead and wear a color that has some saturation to it. This ensures that the color will warm up your skin tone rather than make you appear pale.
