7-year-old double amputee makes modeling debut

This young model is jumping into the hearts of thousands.

According to Yahoo, Daisy-May Demetre was born with “underdeveloped fibular bones in both legs,” causing her parents to decide at an early age that she “have both legs amputated below the knee.” Now 7 years old, the Birmingham, England native has prosthetic legs, a passion for gymnastics and a modeling contract with British brand River Island.

Before winning her modeling contract, Demetre first strut her stuff down the runway at London Fashion Week, says Yahoo, eventually landing a contract with Zebedee Management, an “agency that specializes in disability-inclusive models.”

While River Island says Demetre’s energetic personality embodies their brand, her father Alex told London’s Times that his daughter’s purpose is much bigger than this one campaign.

“My original statement, which I stick by now, is that she will be the most influential [and] inspiring double amputee to have lived, ” he said. “The support we get through Instagram from other disabled and non-disabled people is what we are about — helping to put smiles on faces and inspire people to push and follow their dreams.”

JLo teams up with Guiseppe Zanotti for luxury shoe collection

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to dress more fashionably, Jennifer Lopez and Guiseppe Zanotti are here to help.

According to Yahoo, Lopez is teaming up with the Italian shoe designer to release a luxury shoe line set to launch on Jan. 23. Called”#GiuseppexJennifer,” the collection features six different designs that “[channel] the singer and actress’s flashy personal style” and features “a pair of lace-up, bejeweled stiletto boots in metallic silver teased by the brand” that Yahoo says is shaping up to be the star of the forthcoming line.

The first major celebrity collaboration for Zanotti, Yahoo reports that the #GiuseppexJennifer collection will be available on the Giuseppe Zanotti website as well as in stores.

We’ll be on the look out for the line very soon!

Rodriguez says ‘goodbye’ to body pressure

It’s no secret that actresses are expected to look flawless and be fit in order to get roles in films or television shows. But Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez said that she’s had enough of the industry’s body standards.

According to People, Rodriguez said that she used to feel pressure to fit into a certain size in order to be a successful actress.

“Of course I’ve fallen into the pressure! 100 percent I’ve fallen into the culture,” Rodriguez told stylist and editor-in-chief of Yahoo Style, Joe Zee.

Explaining how that “culture” aims to trap stars into a vicious cycle of pursuing perfection, Rodriguez said, “If you look like a swimsuit model then you’re hot and everybody’s going to want you and money’s going to flow through, and everything’s going to be grand and dandy … And that’s bulls—.”

Although she knows that the industry operates on a certain standard of beauty, Rodriguez said she knows that true beauty is not restricted to such a standard.

“You go to television and film, and, it does add 10 lbs., and, I don’t look like a skinny mini, and, the truth is, that’s okay too, and that is beautiful also.”

Rodriguez attributed her strong sense of self to her upbringing. The actress told People, “”[My dad] prepared us to be able to look at billboards and magazines and say, ‘This is not the only body type that is beautiful’ … He would encourage us to find our beauty and love our beauty and accept our beauty as what God gave us.”

Summing up her parents’ lessons, Rodriguez offered, “My parents really encouraged us to have confidence in who we are and accept who we are because it is not going to change and we are beautiful.”

Sarandon Selected as Face of L’Oréal

The beauty industry is about to get a bit more inclusive.

On Jan. 8, L’Oréal Paris announced that actress Susan Sarandon will be the brand’s latest international brand ambassador, according to Yahoo. At 69, Sarandon joins the likes of Helen Mirren and Diane Keaton as over-65 spokesmodels for the brand.

Yahoo’s Sarah Bliss writes that the decision to feature Sarandon sends a message that beauty is not contingent on age, pointing out that L’Oréal seems to have selected models for every decade of life: “Julianne Moore is 55, Naomi Watts is 47, Lara Stone is 32, Blake Lively is 28 and Karlie Kloss is 23. No matter what age you are, they have a spokesperson to reflect where you are. With a dearth of models over 30, it’s a smart choice that is being noticed.”

Bliss points out that while younger models seem to be chosen based on their appearance, over-65 models are selected not only because they are beautiful, but also because they are strong and successful women. Cyril Chapuy, L’Oréal Paris’ brand global president had this to say on selecting Sarandon as their spokesmodel:

“Susan is a cinematic icon … She is strong, charismatic and talented, and has a compelling sense of self. Her outspoken activism, captivating film work and authentic charm continue to inspire women to be fearless and believe in their convictions.”

According to Yahoo, Sarandon also feels that her partnership with the beauty brand will be impactful. The actress said that she is proud to represent L’Oréal and join in their mission of empowering women.

“The very first time I heard ‘Because I’m Worth It’ [the brand’s motto], it definitely was a shift in the framing of why you should look good. It had to do with women becoming the master of their own lives and decisions. It’s an extremely powerful statement that has transcended time. Beauty comes from the inside; it’s a state of mind,” she said.

Thank you, L’Oréal and Susan Sarandon, for showing us that true beauty transcends age.

She Leads, You Follow: Jingle Ball Edition

Every great holiday season begins with a great playlist, and Z100’s 2015 Jingle Ball on Dec. 11 happened to do just that, delivering some of the hottest music from the biggest stars all in one place. New York City’s Madison Square Garden played host to the likes of Charlie Puth, Demi Lovato and even Nick Jonas as they ushered in the holiday season in the city with their most successful songs of the year. An added benefit of the star-studded event: the red carpet fashion prior to the show.

Setting the red carpet ablaze in a white-hot look was “Same Old Love” singer Selena Gomez, who attended the Jingle Ball concert in a white strapless bodycon dress. She paired her look with black pumps while styling her hair in long, loose waves.

Following suit in a red ensemble was Modern Family‘s Ariel Winter. Winter took to Jingle Ball in a cutout halter jumpsuit, which she paired with a metallic clutch and heels.

Adding a pop of color to the Jingle Ball red carpet was Kelsea Ballerini, who opted for a black tank and a Jay Godfrey turquoise skirt. The “Love Me Like You Mean It” singer polished off her ensemble with colorful Alejandra G. lace-up pumps, says Yahoo.

Although these ladies are dressed for the biggest musical event of the holiday season, there are certain things we can learn from their look to apply to the way we dress every day:

  1. Simple is stunning – Gomez’s white bodycon dress is certainly sexy, but it’s also quite simple. The dress has a very streamlined silhouette and has no embellishment, but it still manages to capture our attention. This is because it fits like a glove and accentuates her curves. When you shop for dresses, blouses, pants or skirts, be sure that each piece fits these three main points on your body: your bust, your natural waist and your hips. This means making sure that there is no pulling at the bust and hips, while also making sure that the waist fits snugly around your natural waist.
  2. Jump into jumpsuits – Winter’s ensemble reminds us that jumpsuits are a great option for holiday parties. This jumpsuit’s festive cranberry color makes it perfect for the holidays, and when paired with gold accessories (as Winter did), it makes it all the more ready for any party that may come your way. If you want to try a jumpsuit this season, be sure to pay attention to the details of the garment to determine where and how it can be worn. For example, a jumpsuit with cutouts like Winter’s may not be appropriate for a family gathering, but it could be fun for a night with friends.
  3. Add a splash of color – Ballerini may have opted for a bright color that’s not normally associated with the holidays, but the pop of color is a nice way to break the sea of red and green. If you want to try a pop of color this holiday season but don’t want to seem out of place, try it in smaller amounts; a turquoise necklace or bright pink pumps paired with an all-black ensemble is a chic, but subtle way to add some color into your holiday ensembles.

A Gift to ‘WomanKIND’

Gorgeous photos from models’ latest photo shoots often grace the feeds of social media users around the world. Trace any of these photos back to the models’ accounts, and you’re sure to find a collection of equally stunning images from their everyday lives and photo shoots alike, many times accompanied by comments from other users gushing over the models’ natural beauty and abundance of confidence.

Self-described curvy model Jessica Vander Leahy has received many such comments from her over 7,000 Instagram followers over the years, with some of her followers asking her for advice on how they, too, could feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.

Leahy began to receive so many requests for help that she told Susan Rinkunas, writer for New York Magazine’s “The Cut,” that she “‘felt an obligation’ to have an honest conversation about body image.”

With the help of fellow models Stefania Ferrario, Olivia Langdon, Margaret Macpherson and Sophie Sheppard, Leahy created, edited and directed a series of video interviews called “Project WomanKIND.” The Youtube series features conversations with the models in which they discuss how they came to accept and love their bodies, flaws and all.

According to Rinkunas’ article, which also appeared on Yahoo, the video series is meant to encourage women of all shapes and sizes while also “getting women talking about body image and self-acceptance.”

In their interview, Leahy told Rinkunas that “‘Project WomanKIND is about being comfortable and happy with yourself.'” She also explained that the project is, as the name implies, about being ‘kind’ to ourselves, saying that being kind to yourself means living authentically and unapologetically.

“‘Really, it’s just about giving you the confidence to be yourself,'” Leahy said, “‘to step out and say, “This is who I am and if you don’t like it, I don’t care.'”

Thank you, Jessica Vander Leahy, for continuing this important body-positive conversation.

Take Her Look [For Less]

Taraji P. Henson is pretty fierce as Empire’s Cookie Lyon, but at the Fox Summer Television Critics Association week-long press event, Henson didn’t need to be in costume to look just as fierce as her character.

Yahoo Style reported that the actress attended the TCAs in an over-the-top sexy little black dress by Cushnie et Ochs, featuring a wide-open plunging neckline. She styled her sassy look with silver sandals and a black and white striped clutch, while letting her hair fall into loose, sultry waves.

Henson’s bare-it-all LBD, the Cushnie et Ochs Flap Edge Dress, is certainly a stunning look. But what’s quite possibly more stunning is its $1,595 price tag! All hope is not lost, however, if you wish to take Henson’s look for yourself — we believe that you don’t have to spend like a star to look like one, so we went out in search of all the pieces necessary to recreate her sexy style from head to toe for under $200. Read on to see the results!

First up on our shopping list was a black dress with a deep, plunging neckline to rival Henson’s Cushnie et Ochs number. Lulu’s came through for us with their Finders Keepers Next in Line to Take a Bow Black Dress, which features an equally deep v-neckline. And if that’s not enough sexy for you, it also has an open back! This dress also has a very similar construction to Henson’s designer dress, both made with a thick band at the waist and angled flaps at the hip. The only significant difference between this dress and the Cushnie et Ochs frock is the price — the Finders Keepers dress is only $141, a price difference of $1,454!

Lulu’s also checked off another item on our shopping list — silver strappy heels. These metallic sandals could easily pass for Henson’s heels, but the Glam Squad Silver Ankle Strap Heels will only set you back $22.

A black and white striped clutch completes our look for less, and T.J. Maxx had the perfect style to round out our look-alike ensemble. The Striped Hardcase Clutch by La Regale is a dead ringer for Henson’s clutch with its shiny, faux-shell embossed exterior. But this clutch probably doesn’t match the price of Henson’s clutch, coming in at only $29.99.

If you loved Taraji P. Henson’s $1,595 Cushnie et Ochs ensemble, you’ll be able to take her look for exactly $1,402.01 less, because our look-alike outfit costs only $192.99!

Happy Shopping!

Clothed in Positivity

It’s hard to not overhear other shoppers’ conversations while browsing the racks and shelves of your favorite store. But what one Old Navy shopper overheard affected her in a way that she never expected.

Yahoo reports that on July 3, wedding photographer Rachel Taylor was shopping at her local Old Navy when she eavesdropped on a nearby mother and daughter’s conversation. Taylor wrote in a post on her Facebook account that the daughter “‘picked up a plus-size tank top, showed it to her mom and said, ‘Look! Me and So-and-so can fit in this tank top!'” She went on to say that the girl’s mother laughed, and replied to her daughter saying, “‘Yeah, you could! That thing is huge!’”

The object of the mother-daughter duo’s comments was a tank top that happened to be in Taylor’s size. Initially, the comments hurt Taylor; in fact, they hurt her so much that she began to cry. In her Facebook post, she wrote, “‘My husband walked me out of the store to the car. I sat in the car crying for a long time but eventually went back inside to finish my shopping.’”

However, Taylor did not let those insensitive comments cripple her; she not only went back into the Old Navy to finish shopping, she also ended up trying on the tank top and buying it, because she said she looked “fierce” in the American flag-inspired top.

Although Taylor’s post on the incident has gone viral with Yahoo reporting that the post received “90,000 likes, 5,000 comments, and 2,500 shares, the important thing is not the attention that the post garnered. The important thing is that Taylor didn’t let the snide remarks of other shoppers keep her from being her gorgeous self, and she found positivity it what could have been a negative situation.

Work it, Rachel! We think you look fierce in that tank, too!

Take Her Look [For Less]

Every now and then, someone enters the public realm and captures the world’s attention with their style, elegance and class. And right now, all eyes are on none other than Mrs. Amal Clooney.

Yahoo Style Editors reported today that Clooney was spotted in London after a business meeting wearing a tweed lilac dress and matching blazer with a pale yellow trim by Giambattista Valli. She styled the springy suit with a beautiful bone colored pointy-toe pump from Gianvito Rossi and Dior Bar Bag as her ‘work’ bag.

Although Mrs. Clooney’s dress/blazer combination cannot be priced, her shoes are available at Barney’s New York in black for $995. Her gorgeous Dior bag, the object of our envy and today’s “Take Her Look [For Less], also has an elusive price tag; Dior only releases pricing upon request, but according to Bagreporter.com, Dior bags as of November 2013 started at $1,450. So as much as we all love Clooney’s impeccable style, it looks like we won’t be purchasing any of the exact pieces she’s wearing any time soon!

But that doesn’t mean we can’t find similar pieces for a fraction of the cost! We found this strikingly similar (minus the) leather shopper tote from Express that mimics the handle style and structure of the Dior bag; it even has a dangling tag from one of the handles just like Clooney’s bag! However, you won’t have to take out a loan to purchase this bag – it’s only $69.90! If that’s not enough, it comes in two colors: black (shown) and a vibrant red!

So if you love Amal Clooney’s style but can’t afford even a thread off of one of her outfits (don’t feel bad – we can’t afford it either!), there are always ways to mimic her style without paying the price for it. Don’t have the dough for Clooney’s Dior Bar Bag? Try out this great option from Express; it’s an accessible way to achieve Clooney’s look without breaking your budget.

Swiftly Coming to the Rescue

On Saturday, June 6, Texas firefighter Aaron Van Riper was called to the scene of a head-on car collision in which two people were severely injured. Little did Van Riper know that he was being called to rescue his own family: his wife and his seven-year-old son.

Yahoo‘s Amy Capetta reports that both his son, Jonathan, and his wife, Amber, sustained several fractures and had to be taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital via LifeFlight. Amber endured a nine-hour surgery to repair her pelvis which fractured in five places, while Jonathan broke both his arm and his leg.

According to Yahoo, Van Riper’s friends and family set up a GoFundMe page to help with rising medical costs, as his wife and son’s medical treatment will be ongoing.

And not only did friends, family and anonymous donors come to the family’s rescue, a certain songstress who is known as much for her charity as she is for her music also came to the family’s aid: Taylor Swift.

Friends of the Van Riper family noticed that Swift had donated a whopping $15,000 to the family, which is sure to make a dent in Amber and Jonathan’s medical expenses. Yahoo says that Buzzfeed confirmed that the donation was not a hoax.

Miss Swift, the world is impressed with your generosity. You are truly living an inspired life!
